Owned 3rd Rail PRR M1a mountain for about 7 years.

Last night the sound system started acting up -eg: hit the whistle bitton and the whistle would blow continuously.

 Then the locomotive started stopping indicating a short on the Z-4000. Put it on the test track and luckily noticed a spark under the tender.

Found that pickup roller assembly, instead of being fixed, could rotate right or left on the fastener to the tender.

I positioned the pickup roller so it did not spark. And put it back on the layout.

Ran it now for about 20 minutes without any problems

May eventaully have to fix this ability of the pickup roller assembly to rotate off dead center.

Any suggestions..

Charlie;

Might I suggest that before you do anything you call or e-mail Scott to seek his advice on what to do.  It's possible that the screw threads have worn so tightening the screw won't hold for long.  Either some Loctite on the threads or a slightly larger diameter screw may be needed.  Scott may have some good advice on what works best for your issue.
