I removed that tender pickup roller on mine since I didn't like the looks.  I never have had any problems running with the two rollers under the locomotive.

I have not opened the tender yet to inspect.

Your suggestion sounds like the obvious answer.

Or, I might do what Bob suggests, remove the tender pick up roller.

Might I suggest that before you do anything you call or e-mail Scott to seek his advice on what to do.  It's possible that the screw threads have worn so tightening the screw won't hold for long.  Either some Loctite on the threads or a slightly larger diameter screw may be needed.  Scott may have some good advice on what works best for your issue.
