What Did You Buy At York? Good Deals, Unusual Things, . . .

Found some nice k-line shadow rail curves with ties for a new layout in the planning, total of 80 pieces for $2.50 a section,, yes. Then bought a nice postwar lackawanna fm maroon top in its box for ..didnt have an insert so went to east coast parts and purchased the insert from him. Great day at york..very happy camper...attendance was low in my opinion as the aisles were not crowded as in past meets..

Been looking for one of these at a decent price...

Got a great deal on a Lionel Santa Fe ES44AC number 440.  And LED light rolls from OGRE.  A few eye droppers and bottle of Eliminator from JEB.

I had a very good York Meet.For starters I picked up the MTH York Box Car which I preordered,then I had to pick up a new MTH DCS system since the one I had could not have the MTH 6.0 uploaded to my old TIU which I had for 14 years so I went over to Just Trains and purchased a new one one. I then purchased an MTH Pennsylvania 40 Reefer Car from Trains &Things,the Lionel Uncle Sam "Enlist Now" Box Car from Brentwood Antiques, and the MTH Christmas (Red) Flat Car w/Lighted Christmas Trees.All in all a good time at York this Friday.

I wasn't in much of a buying mood but that doesn't mean nothing came home with me....

An LGB book that I'll never read. It is written entirely in German and, well, I don't speak German! I still love LGB products and always pick up an LGB book or catalog when I can.

The real prize was a near mint in the box 1954 Postwar 1515WS set. I purchased this from the former owner of Catoctin Mountain Trains. It appears to have only been test run. Only half of the original smoke pellets have been used. There is no rust and there wasn't a speck of grease on the greats when I opened it this morning. It is as pristine as you can get. I have everything except the track. 

In addition to all of the boxes in excellent condition as well as a half-used ORIGINAL jar of smoke pellets, all of the documentation is included....

Even the original, unopened tube of grease.

The set box also is included and is in excellent condition. 

The train is in unbelievable condition. As I've said, it is the best of the best. Clean as a whistle. It runs very well....It will put on many, many more years of happy running under my ownership.

I had a great York. The crowds seemed heavier. People were buying. 

My best find: 362 barrel loader and 3562 operating  barrel car. OB for the loader, intact but rough. Both need cleaning but solid shape. All the barrels.  $35 for the lot.

I felt especially good when I later saw the 362 loader alone for $85.

Also got: ballast, parts, neat MTH PRR work caboose. 

Also very happy with the results of my first-ever table sales. Very interesting and fun experience!

Funny what doesn't sell. Sealand Spine Car, $30, was $70 in Orange Hall. Brought it home.

3 Right-of-Way double stacks for $40 for all. Brought them home.

One guy came back 7 times to look at my SP 0-4-0 switcher and on the 7th time he took it.

Got most of the items that I was looking for a few that were surprises. 

What I was really looking for and got:

4 more 24" Lionel auto carriers, New Rev L TIU, 3 new "adult themed" Miller Signs, Rocket Ship Ride from Coaster Dynamix, Emilios Restaurant by Woodland Scenics, MTH bridge, couple of atlas 36' wood sided reefers.

What was a long time goal but didn't think I would find but did:

Brand New Premier Challenger in the gray color scheme.  Got this from a gentlemen in the purple hall for an OUTSTANDING price.  Too good of a deal to pass up.

Impulse buy:

Bought a Disney Monorail with extra track to put into my amusement park section.  I have seen other layouts with this and the price was too good to pass up and not try to incorporate it into my own layout.

Last Day Deals:

I like the smoking cabooses that K-line and Lionel make but I only pick them up if the price is right.  Saturday was the right day as most people were saying make offers as the show was coming to an end.  Found 8 more of these to add to the collection at an average price of 35 to 40 dollars.  

Of course seeing friends from near and far make the 6 hour trip worth it.  That part never disappoints. 

Found a Conventional Classics set that I was wanting.  Ironically, after driving 500+ miles (one way), I bought it from a guy who lives within 25 miles of me.  

I guess this fits into the unusual category...I have been looking for this clock for 9 years and this one fell into my lap in the purple hall...this clock was manufactured by the Central Lighting Fixture & Supply Company in Philadelphia Pennsylvania for Tyco in the mid 50s...it was for sold to hobby shops/service stations who sold and serviced Tyco's new line of RTR trains and sets . I have only seen 2 of these in my life and this one is the 3rd and I bought it !

There is a guy on our "S" forum leaving "S" and going to "HO". He should have one of these.

4 gallons of ballast, some repaired locos that were done, ordered one loco from Mr Muffin's, but most of all the satisfaction of getting out of the house on my first "long" trip.

While I was more in a selling mode this trip, I did manage to find some goodies to bring home:

• A Weaver B&O Timesaver boxcar
• A K-Line C&O Chessie die-cast coal hopper that was part of a web-only set of hoppers - this was the treasure that made the meet for me   (now I have to find the other 3)
• A Fast & Furious car from Diecast Direct to go on my PIHR module
• Lou Palumbo's book & DVD special (Underground Railroad Shoppe)

And just as important, I had some great meals at Quaker Steak and Round the Clock, had some good times with great friends, and made some great memories.  I'm already looking forward to the next meet.

I spent a lot of time on Friday and Saturday walking the orange hall and found some fun pre-owned and kits for my new layout.   I am hoping to at least double the water front so these two kits will work great.  Stan's tanks was closing the business so I got one of his set ups, and the gas station and barber shop were a vender selling the layout parts for a widow whose husband  had passed.   The gas station was built by Frank Barillaro who I never met but had heard a lot about him when I first started going to York 18 years ago.  The barber shop has RJ Shops  1986 on the bottom.    If anyone can identify who made the two buildings as kits please let me know.  I also spent a lot of time talking with other builders and kit makers.

I am unhappy to see Stan the Tank man close shop...He did great work.

I bought the B&M GP-9 trio set with TMCC. 6-11843 new in box. With shipper also. The seller even thru in a 9181 B&M Porthole caboose. All for a lot less than I have seen used going for on the bay. Now have to figure where to put a shelf for them as I'm looking for a spot for a set of B&O FT's I had just got in. 

My carrying capacity was limited by coming on the NY charter bus. Not so much the mode of travel, but this particular bus had overhead compartments so small that a RailKing freight car box sitting upright just barely fit. And not all the way in either. I guess I could have used the baggage compartments if I really wanted to get silly though. Onward with the acquisitions:

I renewed my MTHRRC membership at the Premier level, the club cars were on-hand so I got that one too:

At Neely's Train Shop in Purple Hall, I came across this MTH UP Airslide hopper. Always wanted one of these, and two road numbers showed up on the same table:

On my way back to the bus for the last time, I spotted the RailKing version at RPO Trains in Orange Hall. That one went home with me too. It's so close to the Premier version size-and-detail-wise, I'm going to make a seperate post about that later today:

What I didn't find:

--The second dome car of the K-Line aluminum Golden State set, the K4632-29841c "Golden Outlook"

--Additional Lionel flatcars from their 6-car assortments (particularly TTX). While I did spot three Pennsys in Orange Hall, and a full 6-pack of ATSF cars in Purple, I realized that my "Ridonkulous Flatcar Train" had only been run as a 30-car consist, was up to 52 cars now--and I had no idea if it would run at that length, much less 58-61 cars, so I balked...and the "First Rule of York" kicked in as I made my way back through Purple Hall on my way back to the bus.

Got my entry pass early, but passed up York this year because I put my money down on a custom made medical center designed and measured to fit one corner of my layout. It will be a big building with an emergency entrance, regular entrance, and helipad. I have been visited by the designer and builder twice. They have shown me their design, lights and features, and have put the rough unfinished structure in place to assure proper fit. Although I really missed walking around York the gas, food, and train money that I would have spent there have been dedicated to this project. When your railroad runs close to the margin as mine does sometimes you have to make these hard financial decisions. Pictures will be coming on completion of my new medical center. But by no means am I done attending future York events. It is a highlight of my year. I have never gone in October - so maybe..........

I like my asbestos coaster fried crispy and covered with either catsup or maple syrup....

For my first time at York I was floored with the scale (no pun intended) of it all. I had the "kid in a candy store" impression and did come home with a little candy..

• Several Atlas-O boxcars and ACF 3-bay Hoppers (Lehigh Valley, Erie Lackawanna)
• MTH Autocarrier (Erie Lackawanna)

Almost made the plunge on a used NY Central (NS Heritage) SD70ace, but figured it best to wait for another visit / better deal.

Just starting out in this but trying to find some focus so I don't go too overboard. Trying to stay within the lines that would have been in the Central / Western NY region where I grew up (e.g. NY Central, Erie Lackawanna) and stay within a range of years (1940+) that will delay the day I start thinking about needing O-72 curves to run one of the amazing steam models out there! 

The most amazing thing I took away from this experience were the great casual conversations I had with various members down for the show. Met the guys from JR Junction in Syracuse who seem to be a class act. Also enjoyed talking to Jim (white hall, I think), and realized that my chosen profession of engineering is pretty well represented among train collectors. ;-)

I was a bit wary in getting into this as if one buys on e-bay is seems like a pretty "solo" hobby and spending time with my kids and (amazingly tolerant) wife is my priority. However, with the chance to meet and discuss with nice folks like this, I am encouraged to continue on. 

Thanks to all for making my first York experience enjoyable (and exhausting). I'm pretty sure that I'll be back!

I don't know the exact time (I do not have all the cars readily visible to look at each one easily), but it's got to be at least a few years.  I remember because I had to exchange a York car several meets back because one of these was broken.  I always check out the car before leaving the meet.

I had a great show. I got three engines, A CSX SW1500, a CSX AC4400 with the SCL emblem, A CP ES44. Also, I got a K-Line Pennsy Observation car, two BNSF Weaver hoppers, A Pennsy Water Tower, A new signal from Z-Stuff, A set of crossing lights from NJ International, Hot Chocolate Scented smoke fluid, Two MTH Pennsy Passenger cars, A color book of steam engines, a subscription to the OGR Magazine, and an AmeriTown office building that I am going to put a "Dunder Mifflin" sign in front of!

Thanks to all who made the show possible. I am going to post a video on my channel about it pretty soon.

I found these K-Line PRR Heavyweight Passenger Cars. I couldn't pass them up at the $100 price.

I got a brand new 18056 Lionel Hudson to add to my growing list of Lionel Hudsons. At $350, it was a steal, and it (along with my other Hudsons) are going to undergo some extensive overhauling. Also got another one of John's Super Chuffer and Generator for the show price, and a set of very thin drill bits.

Finally found the Lionel Century Club II NYC Empire Express 18" aluminum passenger cars from 2004.
