What did you do on your layout today?

I basically took it easy again today (recovering from pacemaker/defibrillator implant surgery earlier in the week) putting some more billboards together for the layout.  Printed them up from here:

Lee ( P51 ), you sure know how to detail projects. They come out looking very real.

Today I managed to find some layout time. The machine shop is a work in progress. Slow going. I glued the cross beams into place. And instead of following the instruction which called for a wash of raw umber on the beams I stained them instead. While I had the building upside down I decided to paint the bottom of the window sills. I know no one would see them but I did, now they are done. I am thinking to get more done Sunday.  Suppose to be sunny and warm so I can get all my silos painted plus I think I am going to spray the building with dulecoat before I go any further with it. Tomorrow I'll measure the building and cut a Masonite base to glue it down to. With all the walls together it is a pretty heavy building. Pics .....Paul 2

Paul, the machine shop is looking great!

Did some kit building over the last few days. In the 1990s, Lionel had a maintenance shed accessory. This one assembled nicely and fits well next to the mainline. The shed on the side is movable and can be positioned whereve you like on the building

I needed a average size switch tower tp place at the entrance to the three track passenger station on the upper level. I had a Korber kit from a while back which seems to work well for this location.

Also put together the Atlas Fuel Dealer setup. This a combination of 4 structures, the tanks on concrete supports, A Pump House, a pipe assembly to act as a tank filler and an office structure. The details are nice on this kit and being separate structures it gives some flexibility in placing it on the latout.

Also had a chance to get out the tugboat for the water feature location. I moved the lighthouse to the left side of the waterway and set the tug where the lighthouse had been 

Spent the afternoon getting set up for tomorrow's train show.  Will see about some happy snaps tomorrow.

Working on a hydro electric dam on the front of my layout. Will post some pictures as soon as it is installed. Big project that is very time consuming but will be worth it.

Accessories blocks are now up and running, though I now see I'm a-gunna want to wire the gateman as a stand-alone: I don't much like the flickering lights I get when he's powered-up. Fortunately, I have a tiny DC transformer from my father's old set (late 70s or so?) that'll do just fine. 

Enclosure frame is now in progress; this thing's gunna look fantastic at night:.

Also put up a bunch of shelves to get some stock outta-the-box and on display. My little guy put up a bunch of Menards cars that just arrived (yay!):

I am making serious headway with the shed. In fact, the paint on the u-shaped timber supports for the opposite side of the roof has dried, and I'm going to start weathering them now. It should be done by the time I go to bed tonight. I decided not to shingle the roof at all and to put om a metal roof, which I think I did a pretty good job of rust effects.
I am very happy with how this turned out.

Okay the shed is done and I'm going to sleep now...

@The Other Guy I love your world cities, London's Big Ben, Tower Bridge, and NYC Famous ones, will the NYC fit? (I'm from Long Island, so it holds special significance ;-)

Morning guys, its been a couple of day and 200 email notifications later and here I am. I just handed out a ton of likes as there has been a lot of great work going on here! I am not going to comment on everyones post but I am going to comment on a couple.

Lee, you have done an Amazing job on your shed! The attention to detail that you put into each and every project for your layout is beyond Outstanding! This is why you are able to get your layout into train magazines!

Ray, your hotel is looking wonderful. I cant wait to see it on your layout!

Paul 2, Your moving right along with the building and silos! Everything is looking great and hope to see them both on your layout really soon!

There hasn't been any train time for me lately, I think I will get out there this morning before I start my other job. I am not sure what I will do as I am a little tired this morning, but I know I should get something done to keep moving forward!

Was able to finish up the right of way fence. Now to keep it in repair so the livestock will stay off the track. 

On my layout today - It's the early/mid 1970's. C&O, B&O and WM have finally made it official and rebranded themselves the Chessie System. Conrail is years away and Amtrak is just around the corner.  But on this day the Northeast Corridor is still PC and all the traffic thru Jasper's Rock  is either Chessie or Penn Central.

Well I went back today to theseold Tootsietoy  trucks and stripped them. I was planning on putting on my future o27. First up is a Mack B Model it will be pulling a old Revell Mobil tanker

Went to the Great Train Show in San Jose CA last weekend and had a blast. My first train swap in 35 years. Here are a couple of my finds:

Today I finished up this boxcar repaint:

And finally started loading my passenger cars:

Back at it again tomorrow. Happy weekend, everyone.

Kevin I really like that UP Campbell Soup rolling stock and a custom paint and the Custom Painted Boxcar 

Things are looking great here.Bob the building is looking great. I got a two more things done last night before calling it a day. I finally got this Tootsietoy Mack LJ Dump Truck done and Custom painted and decaled a old Lionel o27 Boxcar

Thanks, Lee! The logo has an interesting history. I didn’t know much about it but there’s a page on the UP website about it. 

Bob, the building parts look great!

Lee, you really did a nice job on the Tootsietoy trucks.  Boy do they bring back memories!!

I have been organizing my parts and tools to start building the next section of benchwork.  I hope to get that started this week and will post some photographs.

Thanks Mark- the windows look OK in the photos but up close its a different story.

Good luck with the benchwork build. Don't over do it.

Bob, I know what you mean about up close looking different.  I have that problem.

I don't plan on overdoing it.    I have been using a chair a lot to sit on to do many tasks that I would have knelt or stooped to do in the past.  It's been working well.  

The new shed is now in place with all the detail stuff around it.

Thankee!  The weather worked against us a bit, as it was sunny and warm out.    Train shows get the best attendance when it's cold and blustery, and the kids can't go out and play... 

Anyhow, more train show finds!  

This $15 K-Line S-2 will be rebodied as part of my steeplecab project. 

Protip:  Black rubber hairbands are a discreet way to ensure that break-in-twos don't occur in an exhibition environment!   

Two slopeback tenders (one Marx, one Lionel) for the steeplecab project.  Also, a previously unknown to me line, the Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia Railway, was apparently a thing back in 1971 when MPC brought out this hopper car in TAG Line markings!

Many projects going on at once. Will start showing updates when my motivation to do so arrives, lol. Anyways, I am not fortunate enough, as many others,  to have a work area at this point and have been using the edge of my layout (where you see the 1" foam on the edge of the layout). In making the decision to build a small harbor area on the layout this new area will temporarily serve as my work bench. The section folds under the bench work so that I can work on the layout. With this idea, I plan to make a permanent rendition of it on the other side of the layout.

Today I finished the frame work for the second half of the layout. Maybe this weekend  I can finish the table. 

Finally the work on 15 block signals and 5 dwarf signals are completed! Some hooked up with turnouts, relays and toggle switches. 4 small terminal stripes used into 4 sections. All are direct power to transformer. Lots of solders and heat shrink tubes.

CGWFOREVER, tedious work but the signals look great.

Lee ( P51 ), that shed added to the scene. Nice job.

Early afternoon after a slow start. I spent a half hour looking for my sandpaper for my palm sander. Gave up and made a quick run to Menards to  buy some. I cut out the two Masonite bases and rounded the edges. Placed the machine shop and penciled in the building then I laid down glue and glue it to the base. The rest of the afternoon I took all the silos and shed outside and was bale to get two coats on all of them. Finished up in the basement putting a coat of dule coat on the machine shop. Now that's ready to have the roof put on and the windows glued in. Tomorrow is suppose to be warmer but rain. But I'll be under the patio roof. Pics of work so far.....................Paul 2
