Mike g, I will be going more for a green colors .....Paul

I think that is a good choice Paul.  At least that is what I see around this part of the country.  Have you ever seen the Clarion River?  I-80 crosses it near the Clarion Pennsylvania exit.  It is really green!!  I wouldn't want to model that since it is the exception.

Piney Dam Reservoir    Water associated with the I80 crossing of the Clarion River is the back water from the linked dam site.  Deep water extends under the I80 bridge and upriver beyond the US 322 bridge.   I 80 appears upper left of the linked information.

Years ago the twin I80 bridges, Brookville PA, further east on I80 received a beautification award from then first lady, Lady Bird Johnson, Lyndon Johnson, wife.   Water supply, Brookville is North side of the bridges, but the area has changed greatly, since a devastating flood, several years ago, that destroy the Brookville water treatment facility, and associated dam, on the North Fork River.  A new water treatment plant has been built.

Yet another track plan tweak, that's what.

             IMG_2777

The siding for rail-to-road liquids transfer (I still need a tank truck model for the other half of the operation) used to be where the loose piece of Fastrack is situated in the pic. This prevented use of the main as a yard lead because a standing train blocked the siding. So I moved that spur behind the tipple for a more railroad-like plan where all industrial switching is from the yard rather than from the mainline.

Someday I'll hide an LED in Grandpa's PRR lantern to light the night sky.

Mark, I am glad to see you getting a little time for your bench work! There is no hurry, its all just time! LOL I am sorry to hear about the Flu, I know what your going threw, I just got over it! As for work, I sure hope you find something in the job market! I too was laidoff after 25 yrs of service! It really sucks!

Paul, I like the idea of green for the color! I haven't see to many blue rivers! LOL

Lew that is how I work on my layout also!  Try it.  Use it. Change it.   Has allowed me to come up with what I think are good ideas! LOL And the reason I haven't fastened my Fastrack to the bench work yet!

Cant wait to see what Paul gets done today!

More rain and flooding in the forecast.   UGGG the rain.

Mike G. looks like the cows and track might be here today!   YAY!!!   But sometimes my mail person wont leave things if its raining..............

I followed with that Bluetooth app last night again and I think I like it!   Kind of still like the universal remote better.  Using it on my Fire HD10 is pretty cool because it is HUGE!  Im having a hard time waiting for the new engines to come out this year so I can try them!!  EXCITED!!!

Mark got anything good going on?

Mark sorry somehow I missed that about the flu!!!

Brian, that is one interesting post. I have never seen a brown diesel before, and I had never  heard of the B&LE Railroad. Beginning in 1869 and operating under different names, it is a successful Class II railroad that services NE Ohio and NW Pennsylvania, mostly be transporting iron ore and steel. It is currently owned by  Canadian National.

It took some work to learn that your brown diesels are from the Duluth, Missabe, and Iron Range Railroad. It too is owned by Canadian National and mostly ships ore to Great Lakes ports.

Lew, Your track layout changes have all been for the good!  I like how you are trying things out and seeing how they work!!

Mike, Yes, this has been the 5th place I've been laid off from in 43 years.  You would think I was an expert, but the rules of engagement change, so job hunting is a new adventure each time!  I don't need that kind of adventure!

Jim, There is just so much going on on this Forum, that it is easy to pass things by.  Somehow I missed the origination of the cow "mooove" when I was feeling lower!  I'm looking forward to seeing what it is.

Vincent, you are right about the Bessemer.  They have a small yard right here in Butler Pennsylvania where they interchange with the Buffalo and Pittsburgh.  There is also some traffic headed to and from AK Steel, so I hear lots of train action high up on my hill.  There was a lot more train action back when the Pullman Standard manufacturing factory was open.  They made thousands of PS2 covered hoppers here and one in Milwaukee bright yellow sits in the middle of the Pullman business park that has taken it's place.  The build date on the restored Milwaukee is 6-74, one month after I graduated from high school.

Well, I'm off this morning so I went to play with the Flyer and noticed the track moved over and a house knocked done. Our dog went nuts when I went for a walk this morning and ran into the edge of the floor layout. So after cleaning that up I ran my Flyer 4-4-2 and 4-6-2 (with smoke and choo-choo) and loaded some coal up. I'm getting ready to go to my parent's house for the afternoon. I'll see what I can get into with the O gauge today! Have a great day everyone.

Ya, looks like Brian is commemorating the movement of iron ore from the Iron Range in Minnesota to the Blast Furnaces of Pittsburgh. Nice Post, Brian. Just needs an Ore Boat pic.

Since this is becoming “Missabe Day” (Love it!) - I will share my latest project.

In 1930, the Steam Engine Maintenance Department of the Missabe shop ordered that cab awnings be installed as part of mechanical changes and upgrades performed at time of general service maintenance.  Even during the Great Depression, when iron ore hauling was at an all time low, the Missabe Railroad still kept its motive power upgraded and in top shape.

After learning this, I assumed it was my duty to comply!   So, I have been busy the last two days updating my DM&IR mikado and 0-8-0 switcher.

The cab awnings were canvas and could be folded back when not needed.  I found some thin brass sheeting in my scrap materials drawer and purchased small brass rod stock at the local ACE hardware store.

These materials provided the perfect solution for fabricating the awnings.

DSC06305

I really like working with brass and solder because it's an instance bond.  No waiting for glue to dry.

DSC06312

The mikado’s received extended awnings providing the crew with shade.

DSC06342

The switching crew folded back the awnings and are now awaiting a sunnier day before resetting them.

DSC06345

Now to clean them up and get them primed and painted.

DSC06349

These little projects have been a nice diversion to occupied my time while my MTH TIU is away receiving a system upgrade.  I haven’t been able to operate trains on the layout for several weeks.

Cheers to all for the great posts and progress!  Dave - "Go Missabe!"

Painted the backs of the waterfalls with black paint I had. At the base of the falls I used a bit of hunter green. Then some Moss green, Olive Drab and  followed up with yellow silt. I'll let that dry real good then see if I am happy with it. This afternoon I will be removing the caulk from the wax paper. I think because I made it on the thin side I am going to have to have patience in removing it so I don't rip it. Pics.............Paul

Lew, it is just a big learning curve of trial and error. The last water I did I used Hunter Green for the deepest part and when all was said and done and the water in I did not like it. I thought the Hinter Green was too blue. So I got the Moss Green to use in its place. Once I am happy with the way it looks I start adding the falls and then the water.

Thanks guys for the compliments and the suggestions of color and pics to help me with this project.........Paul

Paul, I have never modeled water.   My only thought would be the darker the color, the deeper the water.   For what it's worth, I remember when Art, aka - Chugman, was painting his river bed and he started out with a light blue, he receive a big response regarding coloration and that darker, almost black, was the general response.    I really like your canyon project and I'm anxious to see it completed.   Thanks for sharing the steps along the way.   Wish I had an area for a water (river/falls) scene.

Cheers, Dave

Next door neighbor has a stone drive. I found a couple of nice stones thatwil go good in the river. I washed them up and they are drying. Then I worked on getting the silicone off the wax paper. Because it was thin it was a slow and tedious process to separate it but I finaly did it and I layed it against the lower falls to see how it would look. I think it is going to work so I have to make a few more. Then when I glue them in place I will high lght them with some white paint. That's it till after dinner I have some errands to run. Can't wait to see the finished product, Paul. I think Leonardo DaVinci started this way.

I do not know if I will be going back to work at the company I have worked at for the past 22 years.  They just aren't coming up with budget money to do projects they said they needed me for.  So I have put some more time in this week looking for something else.  A lot of the jobs that are similar to part of my 43 years experience require lifting and/or crawling under things.  Well, I can't do that on demand anymore with my sciatic nerve and bad knee.  Maybe 42 years is why I can't now.    So, time will tell if I find something or just decide to sign up for Social Security and maybe pick up some odd work here and there.  Odd work!!  That is exactly what an odd guy is qualified for!

Anyway, I am planning on doing a little more on getting that table top fastened down.  Keep it up everyone!!!

Good luck with the project search, Mark! Most, if not all of us men of a certain age have had to adjust to the "youth obsession" of corporate America. No doubt the good Lord will guide your steps.

Hi Pete, I am doing great! I just wish it would stop the on and off snowing! I just came in to look at some pictures cause I am trying to install my first tortis switch machine, and don't want to screw it up! LOL

Flu, is all gone, like I said before its the darn snow! LOL

Mike, please post some pictures of your Tortoise instillation.   I'm curious to see how you're using your plastic jig.   BTW, If you need to upgrade the spring wire, Hobby Lobby sells several gauges of piano (spring) wire in the hobby supply section.     Dave

The wife went with me to run some errands so we stopped out for some dinner. When I got home a package was sitting on the doorstep. I got another Weaver TOFC off the BAY that was on my list of hard to find so I can check that on off. Before I went out I found a couple of stones in the neighbor's driveway. I think tomorrow I'll look for a few more they will work well in the riverbeds. I just got done making up three more waterfalls. That should now be enough to do the bottom waterfalls. So that's it for the night. Pics............Paul

Brian, Thanks for the youtube links.   Spent a good share of the day watching videos of ore trains!

It's been a great Missabe Day.  Thanks for getting it started.

Cheers, Dave

Paul 2, looking really good, Kon, great video and very interesting layout, and Luvindemtrains, Wow, Great Pictures Of really nice scenery.  Mike g, glad your well and hopefully the weather will get better for us all. When I work on the layout, it’s nice to have music, so I bought the Lionel Radio Station, and now, I can listen to my favorite singers, The Brothers Four, Elvis, and a multitude of Radio stations. I had to go to class 101 on Blue Tooth to figure this out, but, Thank the Lord for Grandchildren.....545A3D59-596D-45C6-95DC-EAE5A3F5866A
