What didn't you buy at York?

I didn't buy the American Flyer cutaway steam locomotives in the Orange hall. Still thinking about them. They will probably appear on eBay soon.

The only thing on my list that I didn't get but I saw about 60 seconds too late was the MTH Premier Proto 3 F3 Texas Special ABA set.  I was in the white hall coming around the corner of an aisle when I spotted it on the table and saw another customer speaking to the vendor.  He said I'll take it right as I got there.  I asked kindly what he paid for this set and he said 620.  The list on this is 729 and I would have gladly paid that since I really wanted this set to run the passenger cars that I already have.  I offered the guy who just purchased it 60 seconds before me 700 so he would have made 80 dollars on the transaction for holding it all of 1 minute.  Unfortunately, he declined the offer.  That is the way York goes sometimes if I would have started in the White instead of Red I would have seen it before this member and it would have been mine.  

One of the Orange Hall vendors had the new release of the Atlas O PRR X29 REA boxcar.  I would have bought one of each car number in 3 rail had I not just bought a 3rd Rail engine that busted my budget. Maybe I'll have some funds for them in October.

Lionel TMCC Western Pacific GS-6/64 (I forget which it is). Just couldn't decide if I should buy the TMCC version or continue to hunt for the Legacy version.

There were numerous very nice cars in the $20-30 price range. I had to grit my teeth and move on. It would have been very easy for me to have come home with a couple dozen additional cars; that I really didn't need. Settled for two nice cars.

I didn't buy a post war Lionel EP5 PRR electric.  Saw three.  One totally restored for $400,  one with new pantographs and decals for $395 and one with a lot of nicks and scratches for $225.  I was really befuddled what to do.  I don't mind some wear, but the restored one was BEAUTIFUL.  Hopefully I will find one in October.   

Saw a salesman's sample postwar NH EP5 with "LIONEL" printed on the sides in the Silver Hall for $300 - one of the originals, not a modern repaint. Didn't have the money, wouldn't have bought it anyway (not into the "rare or unusual" side of the hobby), but still definitely interesting to see for sale, especially at that price.

Didn't buy a Lionel Lines Docksider that I saw in the Orange Hall for $80.  It was still there until I think early Saturday, but gone towards the end, so some one did.  Wasn't too serious on it, or would have bought it at first sight.

In a similar vein to Art's entry , I didn't purchase the PW Santa Fe F3 Salesman's travel case with engines that used to be in the TCA museum, but has been on a table in the Silver (or maybe Blue?) Hall for a few meets.   (I was not seriously considering it, but I still didn't buy it )

Williams crown edition N&W 18" aluminum passenger car set. 5 cars- $100. Thought about it a few times as it was still there on Saturday but I really did not need anymore of anything!

The only thing I didn't buy that I wanted to was a pumpkin funnel cake.  Was so busy at my tables that on the few occasions I got to go look around the member halls I forgot to get one (not that I needed one, mind you).

A $99.00 water tower, my wife convinced me I didn't need another water tower, even if it did make sounds!

I found a 263e for 210.00 with the whistle tender.  And these 700 series passenger cars.  Which I have never seen before for 200.

There were several items  I would have brought home except by Friday  AM  there was not one single square foot of space left in the Ford Explorer . My friend David and I had totally filled it. 

Thats not the first  time that’s happen.

York sure is fun....and  and expensive sometimes

The only thing i was looking for was a railking conrail dual searchlight car.  I did not find one and got persuaded that the one my friend has is a custom built car.  

I passed on a polar express tender with sounds cause of the price and both were still there on my last pass thru.  I also passed on a weaver santa fe sd-40 at a great price but i already have one.

Other than those items, i bought pretty much all that interested me.  Now i have to find space to house what i did buy.

WOW!

Nassau had a killer deal on Lionel GTW F3 B-units - powered for 150 and dummy for 100.  Would have jumped on them if I (or they) had the matching A-units.  Still in their post-York sale - a great deal waiting for the right person.   Also great deals on 2-packs of large box cars - just too big for my layout.

Somebody in Silver (or Blue, can never remember which is which) had an older MTH Nickel Plate freight set.  Marked at $250.  Last October, I was willing to pay $200 but he wouldn't take it.  It was still on his table this time around, and it will probably be there 6 months from now.

You were probably lucky. Those crown edition 5 car aluminum sets (in the box with the yellow cover and the red corner stripe) pull like bricks scraping down the track. I had to replace the pickup springs on mine with Lionel springs.

I did not buy the MTH Premier Western Maryland Russian Decapod.  It was great to see one, but it’s way over my budget.  I’ll wait for a used one a few years from now!

I passed up a couple of real nice looking maroon topped 2321 FM Trainmasters in the $450.00.  I was close to buying one on a couple of occasions but restrained myself.  Wish I hadn't.  Sometimes we have too much discipline.

I missed out on a few things I really wanted, the problem-------MONEY!

Any of the over priced,  common as dirt, marked rare Flyer Atlantics, Pacifics, K5s or Northerns.  Or for that matter the freight or passenger cars.  I purchase one new hopper.

Lionel Legacy NYC Empire State Express Set. Was tempted, it's a beautiful set, but just a little beyond my budget this time.

I couldn't find a price and it wasn't on my list. When you say "only one", do you mean only in one catalog? Or, do you mean MTH only made one prototype? It is listed on the MTH website as something they produced. I would need to go back and find the model year and if it was cataloged or not.

It wasn't produced. The MTH product list is everything in the catalogs; if the decision was made not to produce it, you will still see it on the website. The only one that exists as far as I know is the prototype.

It could have been a custom made unit. I don't think it had a Southern Pacific tender. It was black with two 4 wheel motors. It may have had a silver boiler front like you would expect on a UP Big Boy. Unfortunately, I couldn't take a picture because I was in the Silver hall.

Passed up 5 Milwaukie Road Atlas passenger cars ( new ) for $100. from Nicholas Smith.  Saturday early afternoon in Orange Hall.    Also passed on a MTH Premier Pennsy C liner diesel ( beautiful locomotive ) from Train World at below their $50 off.  Ken Bianco Jr. made me a deal which I almost bit on, however,  I kept my wallet in my pocket ... again on Saturday afternoon in Orange Hall.  This was after I took a large box of purchases out to my car and of course there were some bags already in the trunk from Friday.   No regrets!

I've never been to York, maybe someday, but I'm confused about something. I thought there had long been a ban on photos being taken at York, but then I thought that was over. Is that actually still going on in certain halls? What reason would there be?

Not to beat the dead horse, but photos are allowed in dealer halls only, with the minor exception that you can take pictures of layout displays if it is in a member hall (like there are along the edge of White).

It's a privacy thing, people will argue whether it makes sense or not, but that is what the deal is.  No pictures of seller's tables in member halls.

Dave has it right. It is written in the registration flyer. I saw someone violate it, but I think they were a guest, not a member. No excuse, but likely they didn't know.

Maybe if you were nicer to your fellow train enthusiast like me , you might get lucky and have an after York purchase.  A nice gentleman saw this post on the forum and was downsizing his collection a little and offered to sell me his low runtime Premier Proto 3 Texas Special with an extra B unit.  So now I can cross that off my list along with annoying Paul for the week. 

In case anyone doesn't know Paul and I are great friends and just like to kid each other.  The social aspect of this hobby is what really makes it so great.

Well Bryan, I actually went off my list of needle in a haystack wants and bought a few things that struck my fancy. York is just the tip of the iceberg to me. I like going to watch you scurry around like the flash buying things. It is in- between the York shows when I do my shopping and buy, buy, buy.......LOL. Someday grasshopper you may catch up with me but always remember I have more scale auto racks then you LOL. Also if you want to harass me one more time after Tuesday night I will be selling at the TCA Parma show on Saturday.............Paul

A vendor in the orange hall had several PRR scale passenger cars separated out from a set.  I bought 3 but should have bought the remaining 2 cars.  At $50 a piece they were in great shape with full interiors.  I missed out on some great prices on MTH trucks someone was selling because he switched his out for 2 rail.  Walked away and came back later and several were already sold.  I can always use more parts.
