I am sure I am not alone in glueing realistic coal over less realistic plastic coal in coal cars of various manufacturers. Thankfully a lot of realistic coal exists and are produced by hobby manufacturers. Has anyone seen or made an iron ore substitute for some of the less realistic plastic iron ore for ore cars.

The real thing - but that's hard to find in the size you would need. However, check Scenic Express (a sponser here). I think they have some in different sizes.

I recently came across some very tiny, real steel shot. It is naturally rusty and looks like taconite. I will try to take some photos this week.

I think you really want to be careful about realistic iron ore that realistically conducts electricity. Spill it on the layout and you're going to have some problems.
I'm using real slag in my slag yard, but it is going to be glued down on a slope away from the track. Anything on or near the track will be non-conducting ballast of some sort.

G3750 I think I remember you posting the slag comment somewhere else on the forum. I have taken the opposite approach (although still in progres)s of lighting the slag dump hill so it glows red with lights off when slag cars pass (button operated). Still not the dull red of lava like slag but when it is perfect I will send pics.
