I was horrified when I stumbled upon this listing for a Lionel #1666 on Ebay...what happened to this engine?
Is this the result of long term water damage?
Could it be cleaned up and run again?
I am not the seller.

Looks like it was left in a wet basement and in it's box for years and kept drying and getting wet drying and getting wet
IMO, it's junk.

Exactly what I thought.
Someone already bid $12.99 + $12.99 shipping for it. Fess up, Chuck, was it you?

Blessings on whoever is buying and recycling that piece of crap. They're keeping it out of a landfill.
Arnold, looks right up your alley. Don't go over $300.00 though. Don
If it was an AF 21140 Challenger I would be bidding on it lol
Al
I was just trying to weather it a bit. j
There are some artifacts from the Andrea Doria best left where they were.
Bruce
It looks like a case of terminal zinc rot.

LOL.
I greatly admire the great train ressurrectors and restorers on this Forum, but am not one of them. I always take a Rube Goldberg approach to my trains, taking shortcuts involving the least amount of time and skill.
I'm tempted to buy this and give it to Dennis Holler, I hear he likes a challenge!

I think it would make a great aquarium decoration.
Not sure what the fish would think, however.
That wouldn't make a good door stop!!
I'm gonna say the paint is obviously trashed. I'll bet it could be scraped clean with a stiff brush and fine steel wool and the details could be intact so I'm fairly certain that at the very least, you'll have a usable shell. As for the inards, I don't know how much moisture got in, so that may be a different story. The wheels seem to have relatively little crud on them compared to the rest of the engine, except for the pilot wheels. You may need new running gear, or just the eccentric crank at the very least, and maybe, just maybe, it can be brought back.
Why would someone bother to list that?
Years ago bought a few like one pictured cheap for the motor components only the boiler casting if stripped most likely would be badly pitted and a challenge indeed.
Don't think it's worth anything nor can it be restored from the looks of it, it's got bad rotting.

Don (Scalerail), maybe you can use it for one of your underwater videos of the Hawaiian coral reefs. I think the fish would find it very interesting. Maybe some of the fish will see it and join this Forum.
Come on guys it's just WEATHERED.
Use it as scenery for wreck. Nose into some dirt at the bottom of a hill and put some vegetation on it.
At first I thought this was a thread about the crazy "buy it now" prices people list on ebay for PS1 locomotives. Apparently it is not 😁.
Cut it apart and use it for sinkers for fishing line.
Movie prop
Nightmare before Christmas.
Send it to the Island of screwy/oddball toys. Let Santa have a go at it.

+1 I'm still chuckling over the comments in this thread.
That won't buff right out.
A Gomez Adams original
I think whoever buys it should try to file a warranty claim with Lionel.

I always liked "please feel free to return the unused portion of the product and we will return the unused portion of your money" or outta site warranty, once you are outta sight, the warranty is void.

Whoever bidded on it is probably going to put it on their layout in a scrap yard scene. Couldn’t see somebody restoring it.
When I was a little kid.. maybe 5 or 6 years old ...my older brother stored a box of trains in the shed in the basement. This was the same shed where my Grandfather stored the barrel of wine that had turned to vinegar.. long story short..the barrel leaked all over the box of trains soaking everything inside in Grampas finest wine vinegar.. that was the last time I saw something looked that bad.....
Use some imagination! put it in a part burnt out loco shed. Roo.
You know this post is making the price go up 😗
I'd say "boat anchor", but it looks like somebody's already tried that.
However, I could probably get it running. I'd have to swap out the body shell, chassis, wheels, motor...
Oh, wait.
Mitch
EDIT: Tell ya one thing: I could put a trolley pole on that puppy and not get one single complaint...

Actually this one sounds like a CHALLENGE... I love challenges...
Sounds like it needs special "family heirloom" pricing.

Agreed, it looks like something that was found at the bottom of a lake. I’d throw it back, it’s not a keeper.

That's what I was thinking or maybe a wreck that went into a river.
It will make an interesting fossil for a future archeologist.

If you are already restoring a train like this, you should purchase this as a before photo then take a picture of the other one you restored

It looks like a Hurricane Sandy victim. I've seen rolling stock with similar-looking damage in area train shows after the more noteworthy recent hurricanes.

For the record, here are all the photos:
My prediction? Amazing as it may seem, I think this loco could potentially be brought back to life. It'd never be a prizewinner, but the brushholders and inside of the motor look to be clean and I think all the zinc corrosion could be removed and the shell repainted. It would look like it had the worlds's worst case of acne, but it could be made to function.
'Course, I may just be having a reaction to all the tool restoration videos I've been watching of late...
Mitch
Send it back to Lionel and ask for a refund.
Actually, it would make a nice ironic display piece. Put it, as is, on some nice oak-mounted track, in a display case and place it in a central position - well lit - in your train room or even living room. Act surprised when anyone wonders why you would display such a...thing.
I assume it was not tested. It would be even worse if it said in the auction that it runs great.
Okay, I'll play.
Does it have that annoying, "please inspect the pictures closely as they are part of the description."
Edit: One more. Sorry.
"Comes with original PW packaging. Box is brick."
Hey,it may be a one owner,had since childhood 😏
The only thing this beast is good for is as a shelf dog showing the result of really bad care.
Of course it could be something the boys from American Pickers dug up in someone's compost pit and paid a thousand dollars for.
It's a Collectors Item........Call the TRASH COLLECTOR!
Simon
I'm not going to bid on it because one marker light is broken off.
Someone should buy it, build a 1:48 mushroom cloud behind it using tissue paper, perhaps place a few scorched, flattened buildings around it, and call the whole display the "Armageddon Diorama".
That is a seriously post-apocalyptic engine.
Steven J. Serenska
It's not even a prewar 1666.
Did someone name this loco the Titanic?
Genuine dumpster material. It ain’t worth saving. It’s junk.
You just got that in new, and it came in with zincpest!?
Legacy equipped?

Gee, I still haven't gotten back to my 260E.... I'd be worried abut the motor on that engine above. I've not had luck loosening up those later motors.

Is there a story behind this one?

Hoo Boy!!! That armature looks beyond the pale! Maybe a little wire brush, wire wheel, scotch brite, baking soda & vinegar, sulphuric acid, Mr. Clean eraser, and a small screwdriver to scrape off what the other stuff didn't touch!
If your layout includes the location of a fatal train wreck from the 20's this would be a good one to use for the damaged locomotive laying on its side that burned up in the horrific fire that ensued after the boiler exploded. Find you some old box cars and slam them against wall then scatter the pieces about. I guess none of use our trains like Gomez Addams did in the Addams Family.
No Greenhorn-Timmy, despite what you see, the boiler treatment is not supposed to go on the outside
Nicely weathered.
Someone with a bead blaster like me could have this cleaned up in 5 minutes. Most likely the e unit is shot though. Motor may be salvageable but the lack of tender and e unit purchase would make it not worth it to me. If it had a restorable tender maybe 30 bucks shipped.
Pete
Somebody must have dared the Ebay Lister to put it on Ebay. That someone actually bid shows it inspired some "senti-MENTAL" memories for the bidder. Maybe he had one just like as a kid. It did not run either.
Okay, fess up. Who bought it? Wasn't me...
wasn't me...but I wish I had tossed a bid on it. Been a nice challenge to bring it back.
I would put a safe bet that Dennis Holler bought it.....and it'll be running before the week's out!...…………………...Pat
wasn't Dennis
Now that it's gone, did anybody notice it has the rarer solid rounded floor version and not the typical split two piece version. Not the easiest variation to come by. If it isn't too badly pitted and thus restorable, it would make an interesting piece . . . even if never valuable. If I didn't have enough projects, I might have been inclined to try it myself.
Dan.
