Tiffany, I believe you are running with the DCS Remote Commander, right?

In that case, the battery is needed to save any setting change you are able to make; example volume setting. Upon shut down it needs the battery to "save" that setting change. With DCS, it uses the battery to "save" the engine's "ID" number as well as setting changes.

The battery serves to keep the sound system going during a momentary power loss. It is needed in conventional operation for the same reason in order to change direction.

In command operation(like yours)you can remove the battery and it should still start up and operate because of the constant voltage on the track and DCS signal. But it may be more prone to stalling with the sound cutting out if it experiences a momentary power loss(like a section of dirty track).

Running it for any length of time with no battery will likely damage the battery charging circuit. Likewise putting a regular(non rechargeable) battery in could damage the charging circuit.

The battery serves the same purpose(s) whether it's a 5 volt or 3 volt system.
