George,

The number is 718, and it's a mail pick-up car.  It was molded in green or red plastic.  It's one of the most reliable and pleasing animated cars in the Flyer line-up.   When activated, it picks up and THROWS out a mail bag so fast, it's hard to see the process.  That's why it's recommended to use two different colored bags!

There also is a 732 baggage car that ejects a small "crate"  from an opening door.  It uses the same mechanism that the operating boxcar IIRC.

That picture is the same Mail Car that I found and currently watching on eBay.  Are you the seller?

George,

I used the eBay photo because it was easier and my collection is boxed up in anticipation of a move.  Sorry if I misled you.  It was a long day of watching our two under 8 grandsons.  And Rich is correct in the 918 being the knuckle coupler version.  No difference in the mechanism though.

Ray,

I kind of agree on your assessment.  Too many people think their trains are made of gold.  I see it all the time at shows too.  For the best bargains, I've always liked York.   Cars like this one are out there, and for much less.  I found a great one for less than half that.  The pick up posts are also out there.

Keep looking, George!  Let us know what you find!

And why do people always seem (but not in this case) to use the word "vintage" with trains???  That only applies to wine!  Caveat emptor, folks!

It's a great accessory, it is too bad Lionel doesn't adapt it to their streamlined baggage car.

Actually, I was going to do just that as a bashing project.  I have a great working New Haven style car with a bad shell, and a nice streamlined salvaged car ready for repaint.  It's just a matter of finding the time with us getting ready for a possible move in the next year.  Then again, I have a LOT of pending projects.
