I picked this up many years ago amongst a collection of S gauge trains, I haven’t seen it in any catalogues so I guess it may be something to do with Erector stuff?

it has a light bulb inside and the bent clear plastic piece rotates 360 degrees and the bit it is attached to moves 180 degrees in the casing. It is marked Gilbert on the end and underneath it says IL-1 Illuminator. What did it illuminate or is it used like an inspection lamp for awkward places?

Thanks very much to train1872h and FlyerRich for the detective work to identify my mystery object, it has been sitting in a box of train bits for over 40 years with a question mark hanging over it as to what it was.

I will pass on looking for a microscope set for it, don’t have enough space to start another collection.
