I am going to remotor my Rich Yoder S-12 with a pittman 8424j181 motor.  The shaft sizes between the Canon motor in the RY is the same as the Pittman motor (4mm).  So what is the best way to remove the flywheel and the belt pulley and then install on the new motor?  Or am I better off buying a new flywheel and pulley for the pittman motor?  This is my first foray into a re-motor and am not afraid to buy a tool if I need it since I hope to do this again one day.

I found the correct flywheel at NWSL, but haven't found a new pulley yet. Here is a picture of the 2 motors...Thanks

Thanks guys...I will look at these pullers.  What press to get them on to the new motor?

Again, rule #1 use components with setscrews when possible. When not possible, #2 NEVER and I mean never, use the body of the motor and then press something on either shaft end (output end or brush end). That's a surefire way to ruin a motor.

If you have to press, you need jigs and other support such you are pressing only against the shaft (pressing the gear on one end, and the shaft at the other and the motor "floats"). I just use a standard arbor press.

Look carefully between the cogs of the belt pulley for a set screw. Should be easy to spot if so equipped. From what I’m seeing, the cog wheel on the front of that motor appears to be aluminum. ( as most I’ve seen are ) special care to remove must be used if it’s a press fitted part. The cog wheel can be easily damaged. As mentioned by Pete, the stock flywheel could be turned into a slip fit/set screw fairly easily, if it’s not already.

Thanks...I am 99% sure the flywheel doesn't have a set screw, but I think I assumed the pulley didn't either, but it very well could be under the belt.  I will take it all apart again this weekend and take a closer look.  I will report back tomorrow after I look under the hood.

Does anyone know off the top of their head the mounting screw size for pittman for the motor mount so I can mount it when I get to that point?

No set size mounting screws on Pittmans, ……that would be determined by the original application/client the motor was built for. The array can be dizzying, from fine thread, to coarse, and standard or metric thread,……best to take the motor to your favorite hardware store like Ace, or similar, and match it up from there…watch getting screws too long, or you’ll destroy the armature windings…..

OK, so I took the motor out of the engine and neither the flywheel or the pinion pulley have a set screw.  Doesn't matter anyway, since the old motor has a 3mm shaft and the new has a 4mm shaft.  So where is the best place to purchase a flywheel and pinion pulley.  I counted 18 teeth on the pulley and the diameter of the pulley where the teeth are is 11mm.  Anything else I need to know when I order the flywheel and pulley?  Thanks

Why go through all that trouble?…..have the parts you have bored for 4mm,…..if you can’t do it yourself, to be sure there’s a machine shop somewhere around you…..shouldn’t be huge money, …..sometimes little shops, hole in the wall joints enjoy little jobs like that …….ain’t rocket surgery or brain science…..

Yes, timing belt pitch, belt width are both important. What is the full string printed on the belt?

I think MXL so SDP-SI is one place to search for small belts and gears http://shop.sdp-si.com/catalog/?cid=p470

Further searching MXL 0.8 pitch, 18 tooth is about 11mm OD (0.438in), however bore size is 0.188in = 4.7752mm

http://shop.sdp-si.com/catalog...=a0%3A2%3A.080%22%20(MXL)%3Ba1%3A2%3A18.0&sort=undefined&view=table

You might either bore the one you have or more searching.

That is the full string on the belt 37.6MXL.  Thanks for the link to sdo-si.com.  I think this is the correct pulley.  http://shop.sdp-si.com/catalog...?id=A_6N16M018DF3004 based on metric instead of inches.  Everything matches what I measured.

I can definitely drill the flywheel.  The current pulley has a shaft adapter in it...but I do like the set screw idea.  If I bought the above pulley, I think that would work and it would be cheaper than sending my stuff off to be done by someone else.
