Easy one. The MTH Premier Proto-3 PRR J1a I bought a number of years ago. When it ran, it was my favorite engine. Tremendous pulling power, terrific steamer and a wonderful whistle. Problem was, the tether kept disconnecting. Worst time was in my longest tunnel. Had a heck of a time getting it out. I tried a number of potential solutions, but none worked for long. Shelf queen now.


Look at the bottom of the engine where the frame meets the shell at the back of the cab. Do you see a space between the connector and the shell? If so you can oval out the engine connector screw holes so it can be moved as close to the shell as possible and also if you add shoulder screws, the connector can swivel some.
