Hi all,

I'm traveling to the Boston area today and am very excited to have time to visit Charles Ro!!!

I'd like to purchase a good reliable all purpose diesel engine.  My layout (and my collection) are in the very beginning stage and I'd like something that I can run the wheels off of (since it will be #2 in my collection and I'd really like to keep #1 in the best shape I can) .  The only requirement is it needs to be either Legacy or TMCC.

Anyone have any opinions?

Really depends on your own preferences.  What era of trains do you model?  What railroad do you want to  represent?  i think that the suggestion of an early GP model might be best.  EMD designed that engine specifically as a "general purpose" engine to be used, MU'd with other engines, in freight service or for regular switching duties.  The engine was also available with higher speed gearing and a steam generator for use in passenger service.

If you want something other than a General Motors design, there are numerous other general use engines like the Alco RS (road switcher) design, the General Electric series of engines that have a "U" in their number, and numerous other company's offerings, depending on how "exotic" you want to get.

As to the manufacturer of the model, Of course, Lionel and Atlas both offer this style of engine.  Both are very well made models.  Our recently departed Weaver Models had a nice offering of GP engines.  I have examples from all the manufacturer's and I'm not disappointed with any of them.  All of them will operate on TMCC command control.

I envy you.  That's definitely on my list of places to visit some day.  I had hoped to get up to Boston for the LCCA convention this summer, but the dates conflicted with some surgery I needed to schedule.

If you decide to get a steam locomotive too while you're there, I'd highly recommend Lionel's new B6 switcher!

Thanks for all your suggestions.  My visit was a success.  It was great to see the store, talk to the people there, and get info on the process of ordering.  I decided after all the reviews and hype, the b6 was the way to go.  It should be waiting for me when I get home.

Oh...and I ordered a BTO engine as well.

I've been on the sidelines looking in on this hobby for quite a few years.  I think I've officially be sucked in
