Haven't been in 5 years and prices seemed all over the map. Much postwar seemed awfully high but there were some genuine bargains out there:

One that caught my eye was in the Orange Hall where a seller had a full MTH Premiere NS 'Business Train' w/ two powered A units, 2 dummy B's and 9 cars for a mere $950. That's 13 scale units average $73 each including 2 PS3 locomotives!  Over budget but I was sorely tempted....

Did any of you happen to snag that one?

Hey Sam, THESE were the best "York deals" hands down... right here on the forum at my "virtual bandit meet".    Met some terrific folks who took delivery at York, and now there are a few more items already spoken for that need to be shipped next week now that I'm home from York.  For those who hesitated, there are still a few great bargains left, and I'll be adding a few extra special goodies later tonight (that will need to be shipped obviously ).  I just didn't have time to add them into the listing before heading out to York.  But truth be told, the back of my mini-SUV (on the outbound trip to York) was already filled anyway!

Dave, Is your list updated and will you sell for shipment?

...

Pat,

Not quite updated yet... but check back in a couple of hours.  And yes, all the remaining (and newly listed) items will be available for shipping.  Or I'm also planning to attend the Allentown ATMA show on Saturday, Nov 11th.  So I can deliver items there too for anybody looking to save on shipping.

Lots of great deals to be had....too many to mention.  As with all York meets, it just depended on whether or not the deals were on something you wanted to buy.

And yes, as with all York Meets and Train shows in general, there also were many examples of vendors "on drugs" due to their out of touch pricing.   You just have to laugh out loud and move on to the next table.

Greg, I think we met at my table in the Blue Hall with Dotty Perry. You're right, there were good deals to be had. There were also the usual tables with the "traveling museums" where nothing sells. Makes me wonder why they bring the trains in the first place.

Maybe it's just me but I've always found Gryzboski's (spelling?) has some scale rolling stock stuffed in their booth that they are literally giving away from Lionel. I saw PS2 hoppers and tank cars - scale, Standard O pieces - going for $25 - $35 each next to some that were well over $50. Not sure if the margin was lower on these, they had a TON in the warehouse they wanted to get rid of, or.......

This isn't the first York I've seen this. Last April I spotted a beautiful 40' PRR flatcar with lumber load, a standard O, scale Lionel piece. I came back to look several times but never pulled the trigger. Don't remember the exact price but it was somewhere in the $25-$35 range. About a week after York, I decide to buy one. Went on their website and it was probably close to $70 once shipped. Lesson learning - buy it there if you think you'll want it!

I agree about Gryzboski's.  Too bad they didn't have anything I wanted.

Grzyboski's Trains has an excellent collection of Lionel products from a variety of time periods.  I often find they'll have something I'm looking for -- and their prices are very fair.  Although they also know their market very well.  So when something is "hot", you're not gonna find it for a bargain there.

They're sometimes known to acquire collections of Mint to Like-New items from folks leaving O-Gauge or the hobby in general.  And when they buy large collections in bulk, they reportedly purchase them for nickels (or even pennies) on the dollar.  So even at the prices you saw, they're still making money.  They've been around for decades, and they're very good at what they do.

Train world had some nice deals on premier and RK plus other mfg.

They display each  and every engine so you can see them. Other vendors should heed how they display their product.

I will bypass any vendor that just has stacks of boxes. I don't have the paintence or the eyesight to read the small print on every box.

Another dealer has a bunch of freight cars that were stacked in his boxes sideways, upside down, and in no kind of order. Another who lost my business for being a slob, people would have a headache going thru his stuff

Hey Mark - sounds like you scored nicely on MTH Western Maryland stuff!

Train World had Williams scale 44 ton locos for $170 in Orange Hall.  I picked up a Pennsy.  Best deal on those locos I've found to date.

Pat, I saw those!  Yes, quite a deal!!  You will have to show it at work on your layout.!  I have been looking for 60' WM passenger cars for a long time.

I totally agree. Why spend the money, expend the effort and then not display the stock well? Not acceptable for dealers. I don't expect the same in the Member halls.

I fully agree with your "lesson learned".  When I look back, I always remember the things I wished I'd bought but didn't ... especially the things that are no longer available.  I never seem to dwell on the things I bought but never used.  This applies not just to model railroading!

I saw a Postwar 2332 GG1 -- in Black -- in VG condition with a tag that said $400.  I stood there looking at it and another guy walked over and did the same.

I said to the guy, "Back in the day, that was a $1000-$2000 item, if not more."

He said, "Yeah, and it's still sitting here, unbought."

And both of us walked away without it.

Because taking the items out of the box, putting them on display, and then returning the unsold items to the box causes them to become shopworn. Then add the problem of people touching.
There are those who will not buy an item that has been handled, even some operators.

That is a very good point, C W!  I see what you mean.  I guess I should only wonder about the guys who have them in boxes and some are upside down where I can't read the label.

I don't expect the dealer to take out the cars from their boxes but I do expect some semblance of order. His display was a mess and besides the boxes were already shop worn.

Agreed. I have not been to York in a few years. For a while I was looking for a few modern era pieces there, but largely gave up because it was too hard for me to read the labels on the ends of stacks and stacks of boxed modern era stuff.

Nicholas Smith had the Fastback Extended Truss Bridge for $195.  I should have bought it but the layout design i was pondering in my head didn't warrant it and i already have 2 Atlas-O truss bridges.  Donald, who was selling the CN piggyback set?  Missed that one.  That's a great price.
