I remove the smoke units (if the locomotive had one originally from the factory) as I don't believe the Lionel smoke generators in my Atlas upgrades are compatible with the LokSound L decoders. And that's fine because it's a feature I can do without. Let the toy trains run smoke and coil couplers.

Hmmm... Not the answer I was looking for. Electro-couplers are a must for yard operations and the smoke (especially synchronized) is a hit with the public.  Another thread indicated that DCC decoders with smoke support are available but are expensive and require a proprietary smoke unit.

Maybe there is another way...

True. But is this different with the PS3 upgrade kit installed in an old PS2 SUBWAY? Shop now tells me they also installed new battery which I didn't think was needed. Do I need to report this shop to MTH?

I need just the facts by someone who knows the possible old style configurations, not a guess in order to take corrective action.

If a PS-2 5V is repaired with a PS-2 3V a new 2.4V battery is used.  This is getting harder to do because PS-2 3V boards are going obsolete and MTH is out of them.  I only have a few of the flash type left.

If a PS-32 repair board was used, or if the PS-3 upgrade kit was used, no batteries.

Some repairs are much easier with a PS-2 3V because of size of board.

Now for a subway, some times a different speaker is required, otherwise the side of the shell bulges out.  G
