I plan on retiring in the fall and as a gift to myself I plan on buying another loco.  I am mostly a pw collector and not into command at all.  I am looking at the lionel 700e from 1990 or the 763e from 1997.  For anyone that has one or both what are your thoughts on how they run and have held up through the years and which has better sound.  Thanks

Two totally different locomotives as far as factory options go,….the 18005 ( 700E ) is conventional only, and the sounds are pretty archaic, and not up to today’s standards,….but the 700E is a sweet runner out the box, with a little maintenance done if it’s never been run.  The 18056 ( 763 ) is also a good runner, but has added features of TMCC, and an upgraded Railsounds package as opposed to the 18005, the 763’s tender has the most fragile handrails I’ve ever come across, so be aware of that. As far as looks dept. toss a coin, they’re both highly detailed with lots of add on goodies,…..you can’t really go wrong with either one, do note the 763 has Boxpok drivers, and the 700E has spoked drivers,……

If you buy either one and they’ve never been run, be advised, both of these models suffer from dried up grease disease,…..if you plan on running them, they will need attention before you place them on the track…..normal service routines will not apply here, the shells will need to be removed, and the gear boxes taken apart, and properly cleaned out, and fresh grease installed,……..it’s the only way to get the gook out of them….

Learned a  long time ago, after any footfalls:   If you see something in a store, and it strikes you that you really really want to buy it, . . .  then just plain Walk Away!

Wait at least two weeks.    If you still "think" you want it after two weeks, and you can afford it, then go ahead and take another look,  and buy it when you are cool and reflective.

About 80% of the time, you will find that after the two week cooling off period,  you just don't want it anymore, or just don't need it, or it is just not worth the price.    (The frontal lobe of your brain will have overruled the primitive animal part of your brain that demands that you  "kill it and eat it immediately!")             :-)
