Hi Folk

I just got an Alco MTH AA set and it runs great. Only issue was there was no sound at all. I took it apart and someone had disconnected the two speaker wires and taped them together.  I’m guessing they didn’t want sound ? In any case, can anyone point me in the right direction as to where to attach the speaker wires on an early proto 1 Alco? Thanks. I can post pics of that helps.

I have no dealer or repair shop anywhere close so any assistance to problem solve would be appreciated!

thanks ,

Where does this connector wire go?  It looks like the speaker connection to me.  This board layout is different than later PS/1, but the volume control and speaker connections seem logical.

Hi John,

Here is another picture. Those wires go into a harness that goes to the rear trucks.

Could make sense if that’s where it measure the speed to do the rpm adjustment on volume.

The wires cut are not long and I notice some extra solder on the lower side of the circuit board just above where the speaker sits  (see photo). Any chance that’s the spot ?

 Thanks

That is a QSI set up, added as an upgrade, not an OEM PS-1 set up.  The connector GRJ pointed too is the speaker connection.  Did some one put a speaker in the trail unit? G

G,

I finally had time to get back to my train room and take the trail unit apart. It does not have a speaker. Next, I put the power unit on the track and turned on power to the track. I put the speaker wires to the spot you pointed out and presto, there was sound.

Now, how do I go about fixing this? I can simply run new wires from the speaker up to there but would it be ok to solder them on to the bare section shown in pics? Can I do damage to the board? It runs great , just has no sound.

Thanks again for your help!

You could or use that connecter resolder to the speaker wires.  Where do those wires go in the trail unit?  Usually for a train unit you may have a light or coupler connection, or motor sequencing for a slave powered Trail unit.  So I am confused why they did that, and the fact you did not damage the audio circuit with that connection to the trail unit.
