 Friends,

A year ago, the Lionel Vision Line Big Boy was all the rage on this forum. Some members were paying about $2000 or more to buy one.

The Lionel LionMaster Challenger was just released, and while not a Vision Line model with stereo sound and depleting coal load, is of interest to many of us who like highly detailed traditionally sized steam engines with steam whistle and great sound, but don't have the money and/or curves for a scale sized engine engine that costs $2,000. The LM Challengers, have sparked a lot of interest here, although they are not Vision Line Models, or even scale size. In its 2015 Signature Edition catalog, at pages 40-41, Lionel offered a total of 5 choices, 3 Union Pacific Challengers, (two black models and a gray one), a black Rio Grande model that is part green in color, and a black Western Maryland edition that is red over the engine cab, and red on the tender deck.

I bought the Western Maryland version as it was the best looking to me, and is an eastern road name.

Which one did you buy AND why, and if you didn't buy one, which one do you like best?

Post your responses below, and thanks for reading.

I bought the UP 3985. I had one before and always liked it but just wanted to move up the one w/ the steam whistle effect, and more bells & whistles of the newer, more advanced Legacy boards (seq control, etc). So I sold the one I had and pre-ordered the newer version. I have a lot of UP because of family legacy so that's why I have more UP in my total lineup. The Lionmaster series are just pretty handy to put in a situation where there's not much real estate, tighter curves and you can put a pretty big loco in these spots.

I'm supposed to get mine in the mail tomorrow.

Enjoy your purchase Erol & Happy Thanksgiving! :-)

I am a fan of the LM line of engines, for the same reasons outlined by Erol, and was happy to see the Challenger re-appear. While there has been interest expressed here on the Forum, I have no way of telling how the broad market has reacted. Some months ago there was a comment that Mike Reagan had indicated advanced orders had been so-so for the LM Challengers. I'm sure the $900 price was off-putting to many. However, once the actual engines appeared with their great sounds and steam whistle, it seems there was renewed excitement. I hope the Challengers sell well and that Lionel will re-introduce other LM engines in the future.

I think I'm probably going to spring for the greyhound UP version, because I have a seven-car set of 15" UP yellow/grey streamlined passenger cars that I want to put behind it (these are the aluminum cars from the Lionel UP Anniversary set of about 10 years ago, which are the highly detailed versions with painted interiors, passenger figures, add-on metal detail parts, diecast sprung trucks, etc. - really nice cars). This train set should look very sharp, and will get a lot of use on the layout.

I have the WM LM 4-6-6-4 but almost passed on it because the front cylinders do not have steam pipes

connected to the cylinders. There is enough under the boiler at the front so there is no space over the cylinders.

It is a very nice model.

There is nothing in the manual about the whistle smoke unit like where to add smoke fluid or about the switch under the engine

to turn off the whistle smoke unit. There are 2 switches, one for for the main smoke unit and one for the whistle

smoke unit.
