I would like to add a Union Pacific Northern to my collection ,but I can't decide if I want a newer Lionel model or a Post war Gilbert engine.
I would like some feedback on these engines. Thanks

Are you into sound and high rail scale? Or do you like ealier trains with a tin plate look and faster operation? Are you a a collector or operator? These are things you have to ask. Also what min. RadiI do you have?
You may want to consider an American Models Santa Fe 29xx Northern, I know it isn't UP but it is a nice model and runs well.
Also, if it is an original Gilbert nostalgia you are after then it really has to be a 336 with large motor. If you are looking for some sounds then it means a Lionel product which is OK ish but lacks the TMCC/Legacy functionality with full sounds.
I have all three Lionel northerns. I love them all...I hope Lionel makes more of them.

I concur with Ukaflyer. The American Models Northerns are able to negotiate AF curves and turnouts (switches). Also, they have enough sound for my needs.
If the sounds of an original Flyer choo-choo are sufficient for your needs and tastes, a good postwar 332 with a Timko can motor should compliment your roster nicely.
I also have both AC Gilbert, an ACG 336 with a can motor, a332ac with the original pulmore and a Flyonel #800. All run good, the Flyonel needed a minor adjustment to the motor gear box area but after that was done it is a good runner and has excellent sound. The 336 has been converted to TMCC with ERR sound. I am becoming addicted to having sound in my trains. My choice now would be the Flyonel.

You would have to decide what you want more. Features or nsotalgia... Nothing beats the sound of a American Flyer Steam engine chugging around. I like the new sounds but do appreciate the cho,cho and smoke of a old flyer engine..
