Question: New to the hobby & just got hold of the MTH 7 #30-2274-1 train set -I was told not to use my Lionel CW 80 with it- that it will screw up my MTh set ( Something about different wave frequency) Should I just go with the Z-1000 I saw a used one for $60 or should I buy new for $100? any insight would be helpful- Thanks!

Sal,  The simple answer is:  MTH prefers to have a "cleaner" AC wave than the CW-80 provides.  Sometimes with the CW80 and MTH DCS trains, the electronics in the CW80 creates issues with the DCS signal getting to the loco.

MTH states in their instructions that the CW80 is on the list of not-compatable transformers.  Best to to use a Z-1000 to insure that you will have no issues.  Most used Z-1000s are as good as new ones... nice solid design that's been around for a while.

Same suggestion for the original poster.

Since you have a CW-80 I'd try that first. No harm will be done, and it might work. If not, consider something inexpensive like a reconditioned postwar 1033 with an added fast acting circuit breaker or a recently manufactured and tested used Z1000.  If you want to spring for a higher wattage transformer, a reconditioned postwar ZW with an additional fast acting circuit breaker can be good value for not much more than a new Z1000.  I too prefer something with a warranty, and your choices are more limited in that regard, if you consider that MTH may not be around beyond the next 9 months or so.
