Can anyone confirm that it the Polar Express engine above has whistle steam? There is no mention of it on the Lionel Website.
Picked mine up last weekend & everything functions as advertised. Whistle Steam was not advertised & either mine doesn't have it or it does not function. It does smoke nicely though. It's not a deal breaker but it was an assumption. I inquired hear on the forum and was told yes.
Of course, it be pointless to open it up if it's not a feature!

Look to see if there is a hole in the boiler under/around the whistle. No hole = no whistle smoke.
I mentioned that there is a hole, in the other post.

I found this video on you tube. It does have whistle smoke. I'm pretty sure there has to be a switch for it and then you need to know if you fill it thru the stack or the whistle hole.

That video was published in 2017, not the LATEST, most current engine. From what I can tell, no one has posted a video on this engine yet, not even Eric Siegel. I guess since its summer, everyone has better things to do.
To be honest I didn't look at the date. I just searched the product number and that video came up.

I opened one up today. It has whistle steam. Make sure it is turned on with the switch under the cab. Its in the manual.
Eureka, thanks Marty! The manual does say the smoke switch controls both stack & whistle smoke. The switch reads on, off, aux. Has it always been that way? That's the first time I ever noticed aux.
I was always weak in reading comprehension:-(
One mystery solved!
Thanks,
Joe
Yes. It’s th auxiliary smoke unit. Have fun!
Live and learn!
I just checked the manual. I was incorrect the manual doesn't show the Aux smoke switch but it is there as you have found. The manual goes so far as to state that it is for this specific locomotive. Well it's really not. They need an addendum.

Too bad they haven't graduated to putting the switches under one of the domes on the boiler, makes it a lot easier to use them.

We were told years ago, if it's new tooling it is easily done. If they are using existing tooling then it's usually not financially feasible. Not sure if this is lip service or not but it's not that big of a deal to me. Inconvenient once. After setting up, pretty much never touch them again.
There are other issues I'd rather see them take care of.
I think we can agree on that Marty!
