I have a couple of wifi modems laying around. My question is can they be used if I choose to use my iPhone to interface MTH,s TIU, or do I have to invest in the DCS wifi interface unit.

You absolutely need a WIU for each TIU that you want to use with the DCS App. No other WiFi hardware will work.
Thank you Barry. If anyone would be a reliable source, it would be you. I think I may be better served now and in the future with the 50-1001 system. I plan on using MTH DCS on future expansion and this system is upgradable also.

MTH item #50-1001 includes a TIU and a remote. In order to use the DCS App, you need the TIU and a WIU.
At preset, the DCS Remote is a lot more capable than is the DCS App. However, that will most likely change with the release of the Pro version of the DCS App later this year.
I understand there my be a subscription charge for the DCS app. (This is for the advanced version). With a free version. With the handheld, Can I have advanced features without a monthly fee.
There is no subscription charge. Other than the basic free app, it's a one-time charge. Even with wifi, having the basic remote is very handy.

As RJR points out, there is no subscription charge for the app. The app as initially downloaded is free of charge. However, it has limited capability and many of its features aren't accessible until after an in-app purchase of the Standard ($4.95) version. The Standard version unlocks all of the engine features and functions of the free app and removes the limit on how many engines the app allows.
The Standard app does not include much else besides (individual) engine functions and features. In that regard, it's on a par with the DCS Remote. However, it lacks everything else: accessories, switch tracks, lashups, TIU Tracks, Record/Playback, Custom Sounds, etc. Those functions will be included in the Pro (or Premium) version of the app, due out later this year. That version will be available via an in-app purchase of $19.95 (from the Standard version) or $24.95 (from the free version).
Once you have purchased a version of the app on one device, all subsequent devices can in-app purchase that version of the app at no charge, at least within the same operating system "family", e.g., iOS or Android. I honestly don't know if purchasing an iOS version gets you a free Android version, and vice-versa, although I suspect that it does,
So the premium or pro version is a 24.95 one time fee.
That's correct. Alternately, it's a $19.95 upgrade from the Standard app.
