I saw a Lionel TMCC crane in action and I have to say that I am hooked (no pun intended), but how can I operate one on my DCS layout. I can see from the DCS remote that there is a TMCC function. Do I need anything else?

It will work fine as long as you're using DCS 4.0 or newer. Just add it as a TMCC engine.
However, you will need at least a Lionel command base (TMCC, Cab1L or Legacy) and a cable (MTH #50-1032) to connect the base to the TIU.
