If the cars will run on uniform O-54 (say a full circle, no straight pieces), but not on an O-54 oval, that would indicate that the problem may lie in the lateral offset of the ends of two adjacent cars at the point of leaving straight track for the curve.  If that is the case, using one section (14-3/8 inches) of O-72 as a transition should materially reduce the problem.

 

If the cars are articulated over a single truck, and 2 or 3 units together will not bend to the radius of an O-54 circle, then of course an O-54 oval cannot be used.

 

Otherwise, if the transition idea is found workable, it will add only 5/8 inch of width to each side of the oval, which adds 1-1/4 inch width to the table holding the track.
