It's conceivable that it could set off an optical alarm, but I don't have any of those.  I've never seen it set off an ionization alarm, and of course the simple temperature activated alarms are only set off when they reach the set temperature.  Mineral oil vapor isn't hot!

As a volunteer firefighter I can say my company has never responded too my house and I have had it so you couldn't see the other side of the layout. Of course now that I have the Chief into trains I guess hey would like to respond. There are now four of us actively into O gauge out of 25 so odds are getting better.

The 'alarm' to first go off should be from your own sensors.....your lungs/sinuses.

If train smoke levels are of any concern, I'd place "adequate ventilation"  at a higher priority than the type/sensitivity of a smoke alarm.  The smoke alarms are for a different purpose....usually in your absence from the room.  Creating smoke for the enjoyment of the hobby is a different 'smoke alarm' issue.

And, no, you don't want to shut off area smoke alarms during the running/belching of trains, then forget to turn them back on when done.  Besides, your friendly building inspector, fire marshal, home insurance agent, etc., would look rather dimly upon any override of the alarm.

One of the best reasons I've found for abating the smoke issue is complaints and ultimatums from the spouse....and other residents of the empire.   But even for a brief demo for guests, the room ventilation fans go into max mode.

Of course, it's just MHO....

Yes, mine go off! It depends on what type and/or brand you have. They also went off at our grandson's house.

Why go back to DCC when I have DCS!

I’ve not set them off from running half a dozen or more from the layout on 42” high. However, one of the tracks suspended from the ceiling passes almost directly under a smoke detector. Set on medium, or high, my double headed mikado, 2-8-8-2 mallet will set it off. They don’t on low.
