Williams Budd Car instructions help??

Remove the shell and make sure the connectors on the E unit board are all tight. It may be that power is not getting to the motor.

Ditto above, there was no lockout switch.  If the connection is solid the easiest fix is a new reverse board or a conversion to TMCC

Pete and Nec, Thanks for response. I did as suggested and found no

loose connections on E unit. One thing I noticed is the lights are fully

bright when in neutral but quite dimmed and slight buzzing sound when

it is directional mode (but not moving). Does that help? 

I would replace it.  There are three for sale on the for sale portion of the forum.  Price seems reasonable.

The symptom of lights dimming might be due to the motor shorted or bound up. Have you tried turning the flywheel? Also if you have a source of DC like a power pack try applying DC directly to the motor.

It could be the grease that was applied at the factory has dried up like plaster and locking the wheels. I had that a few times on Williams trains that I bought used. To clean out the dry hardened grease I use plastic compatible oil like Moble 1. Apply a few drops all over and around the gears and allow it to soak in you can carefully try turning the wheels and apply more oil. Once the wheels are free clean out the old grease with Q Tips. I use CRC contact cleaner which is plastic compatible and spray it into  the gear area to clean out the residue. When you're finished lube the gears with Labelle 106 grease and oil sparing around all the shafts and axles. It can be messy so its best to have the parts on rags or a old bath towel while cleaning.  Be sure the motor is seated properly when reassembling.
