I think at one point in time the Strasburg RR was running a Pennsy steamer (D16sb #1223?) on loan from the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania (literally across the street).  When it reached the point of needing its required service (boiler rebuild), I believe it went back to being a static display at RRMofPA.  I'm not certain of that, so if someone else knows, please speak up.

In the late 1980's, K4s #1361 suffered a significant mechanical breakdown while in excursion service.  From all reports, that repair / rebuild has been badly mismanaged by the Altoona Railroader's Museum - poor quality work that had to be redone to meet federal regulations, millions of grant $$$ wasted, a total mess.  And after 14 years, parts of #1361 are in a static display in Altoona.  It's a total screw-up.

Perhaps this topic belongs on the real railroads forum.

It is sad.
