The MTH wireless tether has electrical conductors in the draw bar. There isn't a separate cable but there is still a physical electrical connection between the engine and tender.

The Lionel system has an infrared connection between the engine and tender. The box for IR unit used to be rather large but has been reduced in size recently. The biggest down side is that when running, especially through switches or curves, the data link will be lost and the sound will drop out for a moment.

I've had that happen, but a battery in the tender solved the problem.
I don't have one yet, but I did see one at the LHS the other day.

For an adult I think it's fine, for a child no. There's not a lot of room between the engine and tender and you have to be able to push the tether in fully and pull it out. We were wondering how long it would last if someone with little patience started jerking it out of the connector.

The tender had a swiveling connector end which is nice and fellow forumite GGG wondered why they just didn't incorporate the swivel with a cable that has a straight connector end instead of the 90 degree bend on them now.
The MTH PS2.0 system has the same 10 wire plug in the draw bar board. The new PS3.0 system has a smaller I think 6 wire plug in the draw bar board. I own a few and so far pretty reliable.

I also own a JLC N&W Y6b. It came with the wireless IR system, while its nice, I opened it up and gutted it to my surprise there were huge boards in both the boiler and tender. No way they will fit that in a small American 4-4-0.
