My Mth Z-4000 is connected to a MTH DCS WI-FI TIU.  Loop one is fixed.  Loop two is fixed which leaves me with two variable posts on my TIU.  My lionel 022 and 027 currently are connected to a separate power source. I plan on connecting my switches to an AIU. My question is this; can I run my switch power through the variable post on my current TIU or should I purchase another TIU for this purpose?

There is no reason to run switch power through a TIU; doing so is contraindicated.  Get switch power from a transformer hot feed direct to the 022's fixed voltage plug.  Run ground/common from transformer to the "center" terminal of each AIU switch relay, and connect the other two terminals (1&2) to the 2 outer terninals on the 022 switch motor.
