Anything prototypical that's Western Maryland or B&O. I've got all the PRR I need, and I'd like to see a few more of the Maryland 1950s class 1s.

If it's something like the Potomac not previously done, all the better. On that, expensive as it would be, I'd grab all the road numbers that Lionel did, other than any fantasy schemes.

I'm crossing my fingers MTH still has that one - their new and much improved steaming whistle feature would look quite nice on those H-9s. The new MTH Berks and Pacifics steaming whistles with the steam plumbed through the whistles themselves sure put my Lionel steaming whistles to shame.

My wish is for a run of 86 foot 8 door auto parts boxcars in UP Building America slogan, with SP reporting marks,  Grand Trunk Western as delivered in 1969 lettering (no Good Track Road slogan) and with a correctly done GT wet noodle.   Maybe even a CSX repaint 8 door car as well.  It still befuddles me that in todays world, with all the info. on the internet, that the geniuses at Lionel still cannot get a paint job and  logo correct!    The last run of these cars they screwed up the CN wet noodle on the 4 door car.    If Lionel cannot do this correctly, perhaps they could run these cars assembled but un painted, and let us modelers decorate the cars to our liking!   Maybe they need to get their QC people to watch more closely what the factory in China is putting out!     This is my wish.........................

A scale Milwaukee Road Hiawatha #3 4-4-2 with Legacy. Yeah, I know that they produced the 6-38094, but that was close to 20 years ago, pre-Legacy, and they very sparingly surface at auction. I imagine this would be pretty easy to produce from existing tooling.

As far as something that would require new tooling, I’d buy a Siemens Charger set in the new Canada Via Rail livery, and as far as completely wishful thinking, I’ve always hoped that someone would will produce an O Scale Amtrak RTG Turboliner (dream on, I know).

The first Grand Trunk Western 8-door high-cube 86' boxcars were built in 1965 and 1967. They were blue with aluminum colored doors. There are many photos on the Canadian Freight Car Gallery website in the Grand Trunk Western section.

The CN wet noodle logo was not screwed up. It was the correct CN logo for that series of 86' box cars. There are many variations of paint schemes applied to CN 86' box cars. You can check the CN photos at rr-fallenflags.org. The CN logo was correct for that specific number series.

If you want them to produce another CN 4-door 86' boxcar, you have to find a specific example on-line, an exact road number, then e-mail Ryan Kunkle at Lionel the link to the exact CN boxcar.

I have the BNSF GP30s from the 2021 Vol I catalog, but I would like to see a re-release of the GP30s in the road names reflective of the railroads that originally purchased them, without any patched units this time around.  My personal preferences would be CB&Q and D&RGW, and high-hooded Southern and N&W--plenty of other road names to choose from.

I feel like my constant suggestion of "Lionchief Class J" get boring so how about some of those 1615/1656 style 0-4-0s with Lionchief available outside of a train set? I feel like they'd fit right in with the 0-8-0s, 4-4-2s, and RS-3s as cheaper, "beginner focused" locomotives. I'd imagine a few people who just want a cheap switcher might also find them useful too, and plenty of railroads had 0-4-0s so they could probably slap any name on it and it'd be at least somewhat realistic.

Iʻm all for nostalgia but if you want to attract younger folks Lionel has to move into the 21st century!

What would be even more nationally appealing would be S scale proportioned and Traditional O gauge proportioned regional commuter trains with MPI passenger locomotives and matching Bi-Level coaches.

They finally need to make the commuter cars with hinged roofs so that the commuter figures can be added and removed.

Yep.  I have all the Lionel ACW items on order and would love to see the open air cars.  I think if they get the colors right this will be a big seller!

FYI the ACW recently made a publicity run with their F7 train.  I drove 2 hours to take a photo at a particular place so I could get a nice open shot of the whole train (I picked the spot using Apple Maps).  I was running early so I stopped to make a pit stop at a gas station about a mile away from the prime spot.  As I got out of my car I heard the familiar F horn so I stepped a few yards behind the gas station and snapped this.  Not exactly what I wanted but still pretty sweet.  Then drove 2 hours home.

Im excited for the Vision class A’s which will be here soon, so I’m hoping to see more N&W offerings in the new catalog.

Bryce,

My representation of the 2nd generation Metroliner cars on my layout is through the MTH Amfleet cars (now suffering with zinc pest). I believe Metroliner and Amfleet used the same cars with the difference being the interiors. I used to travel on them frequently.

The first generation of Metroliner cars were the self-powered Budd's which were taken out of service in favor of the Amfleet cars pulled by the GG1, E60 and eventually, the AEM-7.

I don't recall any manufacturer doing either generation of Metroliners.

Bruce,

To my knowledge, only two companies made Metroliners: Elliot Welz and Williams but they are rather toy-like. Please see videos posted from other OGR members on my thread here: METROLINERS - Let's get them made!

Lionel already has the Amfleet Cab Car, all they need to do is add some details, put a pantograph on it, and make it powered. However, electric engines have not been selling well lately (recalling the MTH AEM/ALP delays/cancelations and how long it took Scott Mann to sell off the NYC motors).

I am forever hopeful.

I have both metroliner sets and I agree they are pretty "toylike" sitting across the platform from an Atlas or GGD model. They hold up okay with no one else around, but I agree that it's time for a scale model.

What I really want Lionel to do is get a cafe/dinette made. Lionel Amfleets do not mix well with any other Amfleet models, so a Lionel Amtrak train often leaves the station without refreshments. I'm kinda surprised they never made tooling for a café car!

An Amfleet II from any manufacturer would also be nice. Lionel could have had a hit by making those from the beginning. MTH owners bought the original cab car because it was the only one available. People definitely would have bought an Amfleet II or a business/cafe combo car. The big brands could've gotten away with more if they complemented each other rather than competing with versions of the same prototypes.

Cooked up an idea for a nerf themed train set while I was bored out of my mind at work. Retool either the cannon or missile launcher cars to load and fire nerf darts, add a flatcar for extra dart storage, and if the tooling still exists, throw in that exploding boxcar for a little more play value.

I bet this would be a money maker to be honest. Kids love Nerf, adults love Nerf. Very good idea!

A question was asked at the recent LCCA Convention, (July 2022 in Nashville, Tennessee) will Lionel consider offering a new updated VisionLine J1e scale Hudson? The answer, it’s a high probability for 2024, and hopefully it will become reality. I would really like a new VisionLine Hudson with all the new features. On my workbench right now I'm doing an ERR CC conversion of the MTH PS1 AEM-7  to TMCC.  After I'm completed, it will have few Amtrak cars to pull because all the original knuckles and armatures are now disintegrating with no replacement couplers left in MTH stock.  I think I bought the last 4 spares MTH had in their inventory.

Unfortunately it seems Zinc pest is an item to fear with modern model train production and we have no way of knowing if the spares are better than the failed production items.

I would like to see Lionel offer a special car for Autism Awareness/Acceptance.  Many moderers/future modelers are on the autism spectrum just like I am.  I have made a few custom cars of my own, but would love Lionel to offer at least a box car or tank car.  Love of trains is one of the many things that seems to be common among those on the spectrum and I know many that got their start or still model with Lionel.  Just like I did in the late 1970's.  AD

In keeping with what are my favorite items from the last 2 years, the Vision Line Stock cars, how about a Scale-sized poultry car?  As the only previous O-scale-sized poultry cars were brass 2-rail cars, they could sell the cars without sound individually as well as in the 3 pack with the sound car.  Not sure what the "secret" AUX3 sound would be for it, though, a chicken stampede doesn't seem too likely.  Maybe a Foghorn Leghorn clip?

Now that there are four add-on cars for the latest LionChief Santa Fe Super Chief set, it would be nice to see a matching (paint, running speed) powered FTB engine that responds to the LionChief controller included in the set.  This FTB unit needs to have Railsounds but no announcements unless the announcements are sufficiently delayed so as to not overlap with the FTA engine announcements.  I know, I know, dream on, and not just about the announcements.

At this stage in my life there are no items I "need", and very few I want since nearly everything is a reissue.  I guess maybe:

- Burlington Northern SD40-2 with in Bicentennial colors and cab #1876.  I can run this with my Lionel Legacy BN U30 #1776 just like the real American Freedom Train did, pulling my AFT consist.

- Additional Friendship Train boxcars, but only if the fix the trucks.  However, there are plenty of photos on the web of cars with placards that were on the FT, and many would be easy to duplicate.

- Typing the above reminded me I would like to see replacement trucks for those terrible ones that came with the FT cars and some others.  (I'd use different words but I don't want this deleted).

Who knows, they may come up with something new that I may want, like the horse car they just did.

I wish Lionel will return to printing the entire catalog, not just the preorder items. I realize that paper availability and cost are issues--although they've eased somewhat--but the lack of a complete hard-copy catalog has definitely reduced my Lionel purchases. I'm just not aware of what they're offering outside of the items in the mini print catalog.

It's not that I'm afraid of tech and doing things online. My layout fully integrates LCS and apps. But I'm just not into browsing product catalogs (or reading magazines, for that matter) online. I used to keep the current Lionel Big Book catalog next to my easy chair and would pick it up periodically. I knew what Lionel was offering, and, as my interests and needs evolved throughout the year, I wound up pulling the trigger on various items. Not so this year...

Maybe not this catalog but how about a;

SCALE tourist railroad gondolas with bench seating and cutouts on the ends for steps to adjoining passenger cars.

My thought is that if the Aberdeen Carolina & Western locos and cars are popular enough they will invest in the tooling for those kinds of open air cars and then use them for a number of excursion railroads.

Another set that I think @Conrail6358 could consider and would be cool to see is a modern BNSF Business Train.

We have had sets produced for Norfolk Southern, Conrail, UP, CSX (which I have on order), AC&W (also on order), etc, but no modern BNSF set that I can recall.  I think an ES44 pulling a set of silver BNSF business cars with a theatre car in the rear would sell well.  I am not an expert, and Ryan at Lionel would have more info, but some Santa Fe passenger cars would probably work well.

During the late 1960's and early 1970's these PS-1 40' boxcars were repainted into the CP Rail scheme with the Multimark logo.

The people at LIONEL have yet to offer and produce the action red CP Rail PS-1 40' boxcars.

Lionel, MTH and Weaver have all done several versions of the Packman cars over the years. I have the green Weaver PS-1 NEWS PRINT car. Although Lionel didn’t offer a red C.P. PS1 40’ they did sell an AAR 50’ Double-Door auto frame scale car. Not a scheme that sells well I.M.O. 6-17756. I grew up seeing mainly the CPR block lettered & script cars which have also been done over the years.

Still hoping for someone in O scale to finally offer a series of 40' & 50' combo-door cars. We need to add other boxcar models.

Thank you.  I will take a look.  Is there much difference between a 40 and a 40-2? Have to get on the web for pics, but not a big deal.

There’s a lot of difference. The Dash 2 was built on an SD45-2 frame which was 3 ft longer than the SD45 frame but used the same basic overall hood length of the SD40. This created the large front and rear “porches” on the SD40-2 that are stand-out features. Additionally, they came with the new HT-C trucks that replaced the Flexcoil trucks (except for the Conrail units which were still configured with the older trucks).

That said, Lionel’s (and MTH’s) version of the SD40-2 are not particularly good, so opting for an SD40 frame might not be that big of a deal.

This is why I’m extremely excited for the 3rd Rail SD40-2 project.

Wow, this thread seems to get great results. Lionel Listens to us. Many months ago, I requested that Lionel offer the really cool 0-4-0 Steam switcher, in Legacy command,  sometimes called “The Shifter” with slope back tender and they did. It’s shown in the 2022 signature catalog in several different road names. I ordered the B&O livery, I wonder when they will ship these models. I’m excited!

Personally, I would like the return of the 18 inch aluminum scale like passenger cars in many road names. I like them much better than the 21 inch plastic versions offered today. This go around they could offer LED lighting, new StationSounds announcements and more realistic observation car drum heads. Just thinking.

Agreed, some of the usual "catalog fever" has worn off for me. I've never been one to say I have all the trains I need, but the reality is that it's true. Something has to really jump off the pages for me to hit that pre-order button.

Having said that, I'm also hoping to see something new and different in the Lion Chief + 2.0 line as that's right in my wheelhouse.

That would be a cool train set for Lionel to model. And, if I am not mistaken, this past year they borrowed a couple UP SD units for one of their U.S. excursions as either they didn’t have power to run their own or their crews were trained on the UP route. Someone can correct me if I am wrong.
Either way, Lionel may have the tooling to pull this set off.

Yes, the Red Rocks route has ex UP SD70Ms since the GP40s weren't PTC compliant originally. I believe 2 GP40s have since been assigned to the Red Rocks route. I hope it’s not too soon for them to possibly make a brass hybrid Berkshire. I’ve been wanting an O scale C&O Kanawha for years and the MTH one is borderline impossible to find. If they use the brass hybrid method, they could potentially make a correct C&O Kanawha (front end, cowcatcher, dome placement, and longer tender), hopefully with the correct sounds as well. With 2716 being restored, it would be perfect. I can think of at least a few variations of 2716 alone, in addition to some other Kanawhas for people who want a regular C&O Kanawha (maybe 2755 or 2789?), and likely a Virginian Class BA Berkshire as well. They could potentially make a correct Polar Express engine as well (no marker lights/number boards, removed feedwater heater, recessed headlight), and I hope they finally make one with white lettering to match the movie as well.

I'm hoping the few offerings for Moguls in the last catalog portends a larger selection in this next one.

I'd love to see a New Haven mogul, using the arched window cab tooling that Lionel has for the B&M versions. The cabs are separate pieces on these engines, so applying the arched window cab to the closest boiler variant should be trivial.

If Lionel added the arched cab to what Mr. Muffins has depicted for his NYO&W special run (with (1) the bell between the sand and steam domes, (2) boiler centered headlight with number board, and (3) no stairs from the pilot to the running board) it would be nearly spot on for a class K-1-b engine, of which the New Haven had 240. Some fantastic pictures at the link below.

something cool that i end up being able to afford next year

although i picked up a lionel 2023 greenberg price guide that has thousands of items ALREADY made that i could possibly find at shows or online or my 3 hobby shops that i buy stuff from

shout out to Tiny Tim's trains

Dale's Train station

Nick's Trains

they all have items perfect for the Topanga and Western that already exist and are waiting for someone to give them a loving home

yes i'm looking foreward to the catalog on January 12th but with all my health scares and uncertainty going on it very well may be the last catalog i even think about ordering from

Since Lionel is finally releasing their new Base-3/Cab-3 System sometime next year, I think that an upgrade to their LCS system would be a good idea. Let me know if you agree with me. I also have a few other suggestions for features and products.

-The LCS App could be given some major updates for control over the trains and a much better selection of track pieces, including more curves, smaller straights, operating tracks, and crossovers. Tubular track sections and American Flyer track could also be included as well.

-A new Accessory Voltage Controller would be a good addition to the LCS system. The new AVC could have direct connection of a 135W or 180W Brick and a PDI connection to the Base-3 (PDI Cable sold separately, of course).

-I'd also like to have a dedicated Operating Track Controller (OTC) to control operating and uncoupling tracks (especially Fastrack ones). Using FT Operating Tracks with an ASC2 requires modifications to the wiring (Sean of Sean's Train Depot on Youtube did a video a few years back that illustrates the necessary modifications, and they are pretty simple to do).

-Lionel should remake all their old operating accessories. Maybe they could add command-control to some of them, especially the bascule bridge and intermodal crane.

-Lionel should make larger O84 and O96 Remote/Command Switches. Atlas, Gargraves, Ross, and MTH (Scaletrax) all have larger switches for crossovers and yards.

-Wi-Fi Cameras in locomotive cabs (like the cabooses and vista dome passenger cars) would be awesome.

-Modern diesel locomotives need rotating bearing caps.

-Lionel should bring back road name/road number specific dialogue for all engines.

-I'm still hoping for a Fastrack Turntable (similar to the Atlas O one). The turntable could be sold as a manual version, a motorized version, or a TMCC-controlled version. If Lionel opts not to include a TMCC board with a FT Turntable, an AMC2 would work for command control.

Page Train, glad that you got the price guide as there is a lot of items out their for the fraction of buying new.

I too cannot afford new items and I like prewar Lionel.

I pick up junk and make them better than new.

Just enjoy what you have and add on slowly.

Just remember, sometimes new may not be better

i tend to gravitate to postwar and modern trains and just looking at my price guide i have found several trains to keep my eye out for

i really hope 2023 is the year i finally start laying track for the Topanga and Western and building the world i've wanted since the age of six

@trainmanmasonn, I really like your idea, making some of the postwar operating freight cars, log cars, coal cars, hopper coal operating cars, searchlight cars, in the scale look with lots of add on detailing, and TMCC/ Legacy controlled. Similar to the VisionLine sound cars, StationSounds diner cars, and even the milk car…. Great idea. Happy Railroading Everyone

I’m going to double down on my wish list of one type of locomotive that Lionel has sadly overlooked. The first generation six axle diesel by EMD — the SD7/SD9! Over six hundred built for over a dozen US railroads and were operated for decades! I’m talking about producing a scale version not the toylike ones they did on a GP7/9 frame. Yes I know MTH did one, but the expense to convert it to TMCC isn’t appealing. With so many road names to produce I don’t see how it could fail in the marketplace. I don’t understand how Lionel has missed adding this model to their roster.

Please, pretty please with a cherry on top Lionel!

Anybody?

Has anyone mentioned our need for reefers? Mechanical reefers go for well above their real value on the secondary market and they're not even "modern" anymore. I can't pull woodside reefers in 2023. Make some reefers. People will buy them. We have never had a reefer with an external refrigeration unit in O Scale. I see people with ES44AC's pulling 1950's era rolling stock too often.

...and all these amfleets could use some food service!

Speaking of Amtrak, as Lionel is producing a Downeaster, that Stationsounds Diner Dome may pick up some orders if it was painted in an Amtrak Phase 3 or 4 with or without sound. It's a pretty good representation of Amtrak's "Ocean View."

One more reminder.....PLEASE note when you post a photo whether you took the picture yourself or it is a picture in which you have permission to post from the owner (not talking about manufacturer's catalog pictures).  If you do not have permission from the owner of the picture, then DO NOT POST it.  If you do have permission, then supply a copy of that permission to OGR.  We are not going to risk copyright problems again and I feel it is not that much trouble for you to just post a link in a thread to a picture that is not yours and you want others to see....just post the link!!

Just mention in your post that you took the picture.  Keep in mind that if you "own" a book, etc. with pictures in it does not mean you can scan and post them.  Just want to be clear.  You can review our copyright policy in our TOS at the top of the forum pages and within the featured topics there is a more detailed discussion.

Thanks, sorry I deleted the original post to rewrite it, thanks for clarification,  I just wanted to make sure we had the base rules down to everyone can play by them! Thanks much!!!

For everyone else, original question was how to give credit for own work or what template is needed to correctly give credit/approval of work.

All folks need to do is to make sure they have read our TOS.  As long as they do so, in most cases there will not be a problem.

What I am going to suggest wouldn't really be a catalog item. But I had the idea of what I think Lionel should try next and this might get a little long winded but hear me out.

Lionel offered a special boxed set of wide radius track briefly in the post war period. It was the only way to get O72 track at the time.

I often hear a desire for Lionel to do something with Super O track again or how they should have made a wide radius version.

My solution is to offer up a box of 16 sections of O72 Super O track. Nothing more. Nothing less. Nothing else. That is it. A box of 16 pieces.

My thought on how to sell this and to make sure it sells, is to do as many other toy manufacturers have done. Crowd Fund.

Lionel can set up a special section of their online store and say that a box cost so much. We need to sell so many boxes to make this work and then start doing pre-sales. If it doesn't meet the quota, no one is out anything but time. I'd offer some type of early bird incentive like a free "Super O" shirt if you order a box within the first week. I'd also have a deal where if they sell so much over the minimum every "backer" gets a free special boxcar that advertises Super O track.

Good or bad the "crowd funding" style is here. Why shouldn't Lionel try it out on some niche items? If what ever they offer doesn't make the cut they are only out the time. No money would be wasted on tools and dies and such if no one wants it. But if it does make it to the finish line they can collect the money and finance the manufacturing and move onto the next idea.

One last thing I'd add is maybe a multi-box incentive. Which if they priced it right, I feel like most folks would be in for 2 boxes regardless.

RamblerDon,

Excellent idea, but I think that it wouldn't turn out the way we want, i.e., it wouldn't be O-36 upped to O-72 the way it could have been when Super O was originally being manufactured. There would be compromises, the copper blade, pins, the tough plastic, maybe even the overall form. And those changes I wouldn't be interested in.

But I like your idea as a way to find out.

As a New Haven fan, I would love to see a New Haven Mogul from Lionel. The smaller legacy steam engines have been very popular and this would continue that trend very well. I think a lot of fans of northeastern roads would appreciate that model as well! I would also love to see a Rutland or Central Vermont mogul again.

Now that we know that Lionel did a great job on the colors of the Aberdeen Carolina & Western I hope that they finish off the train with the remaining 3 cars that have not been cataloged yet (I got these images from my iPhone video):

Yes, the Red Rocks route has ex UP SD70Ms since the GP40s weren't PTC compliant originally. I believe 2 GP40s have since been assigned to the Red Rocks route. Either way, this would be an awesome set. Still kicking myself for not pulling the trigger on the MTH set.  I did the Vancouver to Banff trip this past spring and it was amazing. Definitely want to do the Red Rocks trip in the near future.

Rob

I (and my son) would love Lionel versions. The MTH versions are a top wish list item.

I drive by where they stage the train in Denver every day with my son on the way to school (so we can see the "pretty diesels"). There are 2 GP40s that started the summer pulling the train, vanished for about 6 weeks (with SD70s instead), and then came back. They are just sitting in the UP yard right now.

I am wishing for an updated scale Polar Express. I’m also wishing that Lionel purchased MTH’s British steam tooling and is going to produce more of them.

I can’t help but wonder if the tooling for Lima’s British Railways coaches are still out the somewhere. I would love to be able to upgrade from the shorty “Harry Potter” coaches to something more realistic.

Come to think of it, full-length British Railways “Harry Potter” coaches would be nice, too.

I run only command engines, so this may be a stupid question.  Except for the early LionChief locos, can't all of Lionel's engines with their various command/control systems run in conventional?

Not a stupid question at all! Yes, all modern Legacy and TMCC locomotives can run in conventional. I do it with my TMCC locomotives with pullmore motors. It is done by simply disconnecting the ground wire from the Cab1 or Cab2 base. This disconnects the radio signal. When power is put to the locomotive it automatically goes into conventional mode. No need to reprogram it every time. Sometimes if a locomotive is starting up even with the ground wire connected can be a sight of bad grounding, or a problem with the base.

Well, I understand what the poster (Darrell) is asking for and I think I get his drift. Many of us have hoped Lionel would offer some "pure conventional" locos/sets in the same vein as the old "Conventional Classics." These were remakes of classic Lionel locos and sets with no command control of any flavor. Also, the Alco AA Set with the green passenger 2400 series passenger cars comes to mind. Then there was the Santa Fe anniversary set from a few years back.

Sure, command equipment can be run conventionally but I think the idea is for something as described above.

Only a week(or so) before that next catalog drops. I sort of wonder if this will be a fair sized catalog or a very heavy one, that is as far as what is being offered? With the Big Boy coming back around, that will surely(and don't call me Shirley) dominate the front of the catalog with quite a few pages for road numbers, maybe 4-6 pages? I would think that they would offer something else with it too.

So, then what Legacy steam/diesel offerings would come our way? Maybe 8-10 pages of steam, 12-16 pages of diesel? I would imagine that they should have a set for steam and diesel, any electric engines in the mix?

I am still hoping for a scale S2 Turbine with actual coal load, not cast in. I think they should be able to do that to get a win on that. Yeah, we all want that scale T1 Duplex as well, considering how the real life project is coming along, they have to be moving towards bringing one back to the small rails.

Diesels, what diesels would I go for at the moment? That I'm not sure, I bit on the E8's was it, and the Sharks, what else could I bite on? Maybe an F Series diesel, but I can sit and wait some more if I have to.

Electrics, that has me stuck. I would want a GG1 that is scale, but not like the VL version from a bit ago. There could be another electric I'm not thinking about or know about, guess we'll all have to wait and see, eh?
