I would love to see lionel come out with the 4-4-2 A class hiawatha with scale passenger cars either in the 1935 or 1938-40s(?) Livery as that hasn't been done in a while.

It would also be cool if they did a  NYC hudson with the J1e, Dreyfuss, Commodore Vanderbilt(even though I have one).

Lastly with extremely high prices on ebay and many other places it would be cool to see a Vision Line Big Boy maybe of both tooling versions of the Wilson afterccoler?

I hope that list is OK and not an exact copy of everyone else's posts

Best,

Gino Fabbricante

I would be happy with a Dreyfuss.  I could then run my problem child (another brand) with it's centipede tender down the road.  It abhours turnouts.  I could add blind wheels, but should I have too?

A UP F series ABBA, or run the E series again would be wonderful.  As nice as my UP & NYC ALCOs  are, I thinkI am an EMD fan.  MY NYC E-8s look better to me.  I will move the ALCOs and Dreyfuss down the road if and when.....

1. Legacy F40 and Cabbage re-run

2. Legacy Hudsons w/whistle steam that aren't New York Central. So much to choose from. ATSF 3460s would get orders, as would New Haven I5 Shoreliners and Milwaukee F7s. Wabash P1s and Lackawanna M1s could be a surprise success.

3. Legacy Santa Fe 3400 class heavy Pacifics w/whistle steam, based on their later appearance as rebuilt with disc drivers (see ATSF 3415)

Would all these require new tooling? Heard MTH dropped the I5 because orders didn't justify new tooling cost. They said the 3460 frame wouldn't appease the rivet counters and a new frame was too much $$$.

Any takers on the odds Lionel purchased some MTH steam engine tooling?

Why wait for Lionel to make an ATSF 3460 class Hudson? MTH has made them twice. I own 4 of them. Great models.

Manufactures don't need to make things that have already been made, they need to make things that haven't been made before.

Why wait for Lionel to make an ATSF Hudson? Well for one it will have Legacy, secondly this thread is the Lionel next catalog wish list. I suppose that you can add it to the “Next MTH catalog Wish List” thread. 😉

Because it's been done. Wish for new models. We don't need every manufacture to make everything. Both MTH and Lionel make overlapping steam models (SP GS, LIMA Berks, Challenger, Big Boys, on and on). Lionel needs to make NEW stuff. Don't make a ATSF 3460 class Hudson, it's been done. Lionel should make something new, like an ATSF 3400 class Pacific. Never been done in 3 rail. That would be something to wish for.

I want NEW products. Not something that has been made before. I could care less if it has DCS or TMCC/Legacy. Just give me something that hasn't been made before.....

"I could care less if it has DCS or TMCC/Legacy."

While I can see your point, I think there is a substantial segment of the Lionel market that simply doesn't consider anything made by companies that don't use TMCC/Legacy as suitable for their collection/layout.  Some folks will not buy MTH as a matter of principle or preference; the proportion of the market feeling this way is unknown. There are, of course,  those who will not buy Lionel for whatever reason, such as it doesn't have PS3/DCS.

Conventional only folks would presumably be just as happy with a PS3 loco as one from Lionel in many instances. However many Lionel customers use only TMCC/Legacy/Lionchief so that they want the same loco MTH made with their preferred control system(s). Speaking personally, I rarely buy a PS3 (and almost never a PS2 or PS1) loco no matter how beautiful or interesting.  I made an exception for one of the 44 ton locos from MTH. But that's uncommon for me.  Nothing personal, just don't want a roster with numerous locos using another control system.  Now that DCS may be on the fade, that preference is even stronger, at least for me.

I believe a very substantial portion of the participants in this hobby want NEW  products, it is just very unlikely that there will be a significant investment in new tooling anytime soon.  I would very much like Lionel to produce a Legacy "O" scale PRR K5 rather than another reissue of the PRR K4 engine.  I don't think that will ever happen so I didn't even post it in this "wish list" thread previously.

I’m sorry, but that’s like super silly IMO to hold out for a model already made just to get whistle steam, ain’t like the rest of the legacy features are all that over DCS,....If you really got an achin’ for something like an ATSF Hudson, pick up a MTH model and let master builders Bruk or Sid  Legacy convert it,.....in the long run, you’d have a superior product, and an actual shot of owning it ......

Doing a locomotivabotamy is a pain. I’ll wait for the Lionel Legacy version. In the meantime, there are plenty of Lionel Legacy locomotives I can buy. I have purchased five Lionel Legacy Locomotives since February with three more on BTO. That’s a significant investment. It doesn’t make sense to rush and by a non Legacy locomotive on top of the ones I just bought. At some point, Lionel will build the Legacy version. When that happens, I’ll pounce.

Fair enough, ....and BTW, I Ike that term,...” locomotivabotamy” .....permission to steal it please!...I am a card carrying member of the locomotive  warranty voiders anonymous group,...😉

First would be a Legacy Strasburg #90.  Here’s hoping.

Next on my wish list of O Scale locomotives to own would be the C&O 490 Hudson.  I am pretty sure Lionel has molds for this one.  With some new legacy features mike whistle steam, this would be a great unit.

Yes, I realize that 3rd Rail is taking reservations for this engine and matching cars, and I am sure they would be terrific prototypical models, but, as MTH is probably not going to make this model any time soon, I would like to have a Lionel version with Bluetooth and whistle steam.  Besides, competition is good.

@Will Ebbert posted:

Lionel's version of the C&O Hudson is semi scale so they would need to do it in Lionmaster.

As for the Strasburg 90, I personally don't care but enough people ask for it on here that there is certainly demand. My bigger interest is the possibility that they would acquire the 64' Woodside coach tooling from MTH.

Well, I did not know it was semi-scale. There goes that thought. So let me revise my list again for the locomotives I would like to see in  the next catalog (but probably won’t)…

- a scale Strasburg #90

- a scale ET44AC Tier 4 (multiple roads and numbers)

I am now ready for disappointment.

I wonder ...

Does anyone at Lionel LLC actually read threads like this or take "wish lists" into account when planning future production runs?  I haven't read "In response to popular demand ..." in any recent new product offer in a Lionel catalog.

The costs of creating a NEW design, related tooling for producing it, and marketing efforts to stimulate sales are staggering; so it's understandable that decision-makers tend to err on the side of caution. Perhaps the unwritten reason(s) why some previous train manufacturers are now defunct is, they made trains some hobbyists wished for but didn't buy. Or at least, not enough of them.

Yes, I offered a wish for a Lionel product for my layout, but I don't expect anything from it! The highest-paid job at a train-making company would be PRODUCTION PROGNOSTICATOR, but there aren't any job candidates with a proven record of sales success. "Wishcraft" is uncomfortably close to "Witchcraft!"

Is there a marketplace niche for a train maker with a mission statement like: "We make the trains you (and at least Nth others) wish for."  Lionel may already be near that tactic with "Made to Order" trains. Not enough orders - no trains. The only cost for such offers, if not ordered in a sufficient number, is wasted paper and ink for a catalog page.

Meanwhile, the "good guessers" at Lionel and other companies will carry on valiantly and live with the hope that some  of their guesses are "right."

I'm curious if Lionel has bought any molds from MTH but has yet to announce it. Allowing them to "reveal" it in the upcoming (or a future) catalog

The hobby has a rail king sized hole. However, they would compete with or replace their post war items that they run in lc+2.0. While possible, I see Lionel as a little too proud to use mth’s tooling. Furthermore, they would be buying tooling to replace what they likely see as an adequate product line. I generally disagree with that logic (notable exceptions include NW2, sd80, and f3/ft) as I think the post war lc+2 line is drastically under detailed and overpriced (except for the noted exceptions). I would love to see a lc+  powered rail king line.

I have asked that Lionel picks up the old Lima tooling for the British Railways coaches (I may like Harry Potter but the shortie coaches bother me) and release them in British Railways Green as well as  the Hogwarts express.

the Hogwarts Express/ex-GWR 4-6-0 in British Railways colors would be nice, too.

The MTH version doesn’t come with whistle steam, that’s a big one for me and a good amount of customers I sell to.
The other reason I suggested it is because it would sell. Like all models, you have to justify making one by doing several different versions. Using a rough base for a Hudson and doing many versions from it makes more money than niche Hudsons alone. If an ATSF Hudson sold, people like me who would want a Lackawanna Hudson and a Wabash Hudson could attempt to convince Lionel to produce other Hudsons from a rough base.
Think brass hybrid ATSF Hudson, allowing for brass hybrid Wabash, Lackawanna, CB&Q, etc.
