Recently someone was asking about buying a piece for the MTH woodchip car. The plastic insert. A better idea for any wood chip car is to create your own base with cardboard wood or plastic. Then find some scrap wood. Then create a bunch of sawdust. Then glue it down with white glue to your insert. Then put it in your car! You cannot get any more realistic than realistic wood chips. And- bonus- the realistic smell too.
Living and working around here with a paper mill and wood chip trucks a very familiar and "realistic" smell.
That's a cool idea, if I had thought about that when I was building the layout, I generated bushels of woodchips! 
My local Lumber yard supplied my saw dust, went in with a couple of empty coffee cans, told the guys, what I needed it for , and they were glad to help.
