Wooden Kingpost bridge construction

I have this Kingpost bridge I built years ago. See attached photo. I want to give it more realistic weathering and while I'm at it, make any other changes to make it more like the prototype. The kit used these nuts and bolts to put it together and they look unrealistic to me. Does anyone know how they were really put together?
