Nice work on your layout so far.

I have used real rocks and pieces of coal on my layout in the past. The rocks I picked up are from the northeast area around Hamburg PA and up in the mountains along route I-81 near NY state. The coal is anthracite coal from Pennsylvania near Hamburg.

I put the rocks along the tracks, sometimes small ones in between tracks, to make it look like I have it going through a small mountain area.

In another area I have some steam engines and I use black aquarium stones to simulate coal dropped from the tender near the tracks.

Thanks guys.

Lee I am actually collecting some rocks from here in Tennessee and North Alabama I plan on integrating.

Bob that's just run of the mill Joint compound from Home Depot it has a gray tint so it makes good rock faces on the foam. I just scrape it with a wire brush and chisel a bit with a putty knife.
here is an update guys I have started working on the wooded areas around and have added a cow pasture. I plan on using some brown acrylic for poop later. I also added a road through the rock cut between the two farms but will have to post it later as I am currently waiting on some thing to dry before I can get a good shot. The next phase will be to work around the building on the hill top farm and then add in the backdrop. As always give me any constructive criticism. Love this forum. imageimageimageimageimage
