This isn't tin in the purest sense of the word, but by the TCA's definition, it's tin. I've been looking for these cars for some time, but either the price was more than I wanted to pay, or the condition was poor. I found these just a few aisles over from my table in the Blue Hall. They're just about the cleanest examples of these cars I've ever seen, and at a very fair price. To top it off, the observation is the factory-error "Silver Bluff."

Was looking for an MTH or LC 263e engine PS2 or 3 and 800 series cars, but ended up getting a barely used MTH 400e black and copper PS1 engine, tender and 4 200 series freight cars for about the same price.  Most of the tin plate was original Lionel, AF etc. going for big bucks, but I knew that I wanted a newer set.  Also, found a really nice 2620 searchlight car and 2660 crane for my MTH 261/269e set that I got from Mr. Muffins, who are some really nice folks.  Now I gotta save up for October !

While there was a good quantity of original and restored classic Standard Gauge for sale, in terms of what Arno has termed "Modern Era Standard Gauge" for sale, I didn't find a wide selection.  Of course there was a wide range of new MTH tinplate being sold but I only saw a few McCoy cars for sale, a few Roberts Line cars for sale, one very nice RichArt tri-color Milwaukee Road Bipolar for sale at $2400, and a unique "troop" car of unknown manufacturer which Clem was selling.  Not much else.

Did anyone see any other MESG for sale?

I ended up buying the Roberts cars. The only other MESG I saw that wasn't already mentioned was a Glenn Toys B6 switcher/tender "kit" in Silver hall.  The box had a loco frame, a boiler casting and the tender casting with some wheels for $600.  I talked to the seller and made him an offer, but we couldn't agree on a price.  I was unable to pull the trigger because I had no idea how hard it would be to actually create a loco from what was there.

Nice O-Gauge brake van. I've never seen one of those before.

The prices I saw on original Lionel were outrageous. I saw the same items, in the same locations, for the same prices as last October, last April etc.  Here's a sampling of what I saw:

Gunmetal 763e / coal tender: $5,300.00

Gunmetal 763e / Vanderbilt tender: $3,000.00

Black 260e/8-wheel tender: $1,000.00

213 cattle car (early colors) $895.00

1958 Canadian Pacific passenger set: $5,000.00

The troop car was made by Bob Hendrich, the same one who made the massive GG-1 years back. He made about a dozen of the troop cars in different configurations. I have one of them that I got straight from the man himself.

Rob,

I would be interested in seeing which Roberts' Lines car you got. As for the Glenn Toy switcher "kit", you made a good choice by not buying it. These were not marketed as kits, but are really just leftover parts. So, there would not be easy way to put it together. You would be pulling your hair out in no time... oh, sorry, bad reference!

Thanks Arno for that info that the cars were made by Bob Hendrich.  I knew Clem had several of these since he brought a half dozen or more "troop" cars in different configurations to a SGMA event several years ago.  Though not at the rarity level of Clem's "Stomper", I was very surprised when Sandy said the car was for sale.

Get well,

Bob

Arno,

Nice hair reference -- I resemble that remark!

Your thoughts on the Glenn Toy parts make me feel better about not negotiating harder with the guy.  He actually didn't know what he had, but still insisted that it would be easy to put together.  It looked like there was just too much missing for me to cobble together a working Loco -- guess my instincts were correct.

I ended up getting a set of five Roberts cars! Check this thread for some pics. I think they may have been some leftovers/parts as well, because the paint jobs are not exactly professional and there are no decals like on Hojack's black set.

Sort of a thin York for MESG, but every meet is different. I do have some acquisitions from back in December that I want to share. Just need some time to photograph them.  I'll  be in touch!
