... it really wouldn't kill this place to have an "Off Topic/Misc/Odd n' Ends" forum for like-minded people to talk about something other than trains.   Heaven forbid people here talk about anything other than trains, even though they've made friends and contacts here (which has created a great sense of community) and, wonder of wonders, might want to have a conversation outside of the O-gauge box.   The genius behind it is that, from a business perspective, it keeps the sponsors ads front and center, rather than forcing members to go elsewhere, away from the sponsors who pay good money to advertise their products and services here.  It's a real bummer that I have to leave this place and head over to one of my shooting-sports forums to participate in fun, non-specific discussions.   I like this place better, and the people here are awesome.   Yes, there would be arguments/disagreements/ all sorts of unsavory "grown up" stuff, but we're all big boys here for the most part, and you can still limit access, language, topics, and participation for those that step over the line.    I think it would be a lot of fun, and it would keep more people tuned in right here.   We always lament whats going to happen to the "next generation" of model train enthusiasts - we'll I'm one of them and these types of things are pretty much status quo on every other forum I visit.   I know there's an overwhelming desire/need to keep this place clean, but that can still be accomplished with effective moderation and account control.  I see a lot of worthy topics and good, clean conversations get flushed and that's too bad.

Nothing wrong with your idea. There are those who will blanch at the idea of throwing it open for all comers, but you're not suggesting that, I think. There could be an "off-topic" forum for people airing concerns, sharing accomplishments, sharing quality jokes, etc., but then it also comes down to having moderators needing to ensure that contributors are playing by the rules, so to speak. That might be the sticking point, as I doubt that mods are heavily paid for their effort.

This suggestion has come up many times over the years this forum has existed. I will say the same thing here that I have said to dozens of requests like this in the past - it's not going to happen.

One of the reasons this forum has been so successful is because we work very hard to keep the overall forums ON TOPIC. We also work very hard to keep personal attacks, name calling and other unpleasant nonsense out of this forum. This "heavy-handed moderation" (as some have called it) has attracted a great group of people here who enjoy talking about trains.

Opening up an "Off-Topic" forum invites people to post topics here that have nothing to do with trains and have the potential to start horrendous firestorms of arguing, name calling and personal attacks. Just one political or religious thread would open the floodgates to that kind of thing.

In the early days of this forum, we had a few people here whose only purpose was to try and start fights and get people all riled up. We made it very clear that they were not welcome here, restricted their ability to post and eventually they all left...thank goodness! I do not want to open the doors to that kind of situation again by launching an "Off topic" forum.

It is Rich's forum.  It is Rich's rules.  I am thankful to him, OGR Magazine, and the sponsors for giving us a wonderful place to discuss this great hobby.

While I appreciate the kind words here, Joe, you've got part of it wrong. This isn't MY forum, it is YOUR forum!

This forum has become the busiest place on the internet to talk about O Gauge Trains. How busy is this forum? In January the forum served 8,271,619 page views! How did it get that busy? It is because we have managed to attract a truly GREAT group of people who passionately enjoy this hobby. We here at OGR have worked together with all of you great members to keep the place clean and a nice place to be.

In a sense, this forum has become "self-policing." I get alerts from members every day about questionable posts and threads. It is the work of those members who take the time to send in alerts that keep this forum focused on on track.

My thanks to all of you for the great work you do in helping us to keep this forum going.
