I use different scents in diff. engines and accessories (have to keep track of that). I've got coal fired, wood smoke, cinnamon, vanilla, hot chocolate, apple, cotton candy, cherry, barbecue. The only one I don't really like is the barbecue (in my smoking diner). But if I had to choose two favorites from that list.....the cotton candy is dead on and the cinnamon is a crowd pleaser.

MTH has a sample pack, 3 each of 12 different scents in 50ml bottles, but the MSRP is $189. Ouch! Mega Steam has a holiday six pack, but I didn't look up the price. Check their website for more details.

The other thing is every one's sense of smell is different, what smells good to some can be foul smelling to others. I'm sure I'm the odd man out here, but I have at least 6-8 bottles of Mega Steam and the only one I can stand is the eliminator.

Pretty sure that what is meant here is the original postwar Gilbert AF cedar scent. Anormal (the brand of fluid, Anormal) has a scented smoke fluid which is an olfactory dead ringer for the original. It is an aroma that brings out a nostalgic twinge in many.

My Mom and Dad used to take me to a neighborhood bar on West 105th street in Cleveland when I was very young, whipper-snapper young.  On Friday nights, there was a fish fry.  Now, I am not a smoker, but the memory of fried fish, cigarette smoke, and beer from Sinjur's Bar has always been a fond memory to me. Not currently a smoke scent that is offered, but, I'll bet there are others like this one that many of you remember from your childhood that bring out an old memory of your own, that would be a welcome smoke scent, at least once more in your life.

Mine is pipe smoke and ciderpine scent.Because it reminds me of my granddaddy. On christmas morning I would get up to see what santa left for me.And would see my grand daddy seting in front of the fireplace smoking his pipe.Cider because we would go and cut down a cidertree for christmas. Those two secent would sometime blend together.I had some mth pipe scent smoke.Mth nailed that one smelled just like granddaddys pipe.May god rest his soul.

Try eliminator from megasteam. That's what it was made for.

Why thank you very much Forrest!

I did try it once and my olfactory senses detected that dreadful putrid "classic" smoke aroma. It turned my sinus inside out.

Perhaps it was just the residual smoke fluid burning itself out before the NADA smoke fluid could take over. I couldn't take it so OFF the smoke unit went.

If there truly is a scentless smoke fluid, I would be on it faster than Gunrunnerjohn on a faulty O Gauge circuit board!

I haven't used many different variations of the Smoke Fluid, what I typically use is the Mega-steam Diesel , Coal Fired, Cedar Wood, and Hot Chocolate, though the Hot Chocolate is only used in the Polar Express LionChief Train, though I don't get a lot of options to run a Christmas Train.

My favorite was from a small manufacturer who unfortunately is long, long gone. I'm sure many of you will remember LVS (Lehigh Valley Steam). The small brown bottles with the eyedroppers containing Hickory or Smoky Fir or Cedar were the best ever. Some of the modern makers come close, but not quite. They always reminded me of the Fall train running season...

Anormal1 is the closest I have found. The early AF that came in the maroon gel caps  smells more mellow than the later stuff.  Maybe it just mellowed sitting in the loco.

The reproduction stuff smells like the later AF fluid.

Like some other folks, my tolerance for smoke is less than it used to be when I was younger.

John-

I remember LVS. I bought several bottles of their coal scent, because it reminded me of my first excursion back in the mid-80's behind NKP 765, from Orville, Ohio to Bellevue, Ohio. I have many bottles of coal scent from MTH, Megasteam, and maybe another random manufacturer or two. In my mind, while the others are close, none of them seem to remind me of that trip as much as the LVS- just seems to be a more intense smell. Maybe not the most healthy of the bunch, but in the immortal words of Redd Foxx- "You got to leave here with somethin".

I've searched for LVS smoke fluid many times and come up empty. I do have one full bottle and one partial bottle, but I have to pick my spots to use it, because my wife & step-daughter don't have my "taste" for some things, and this happens to be one of them.

Mike,

Thank you for remembering that. I have a bottle of Coal squirreled away as well and a bottle of Hickory. No Smokey Fir, which was my favorite scent.

Quite a few years ago on the Forum (pre-2005 or so) there was quite a discussion when the original owner of LVS stopped production, either through retirement or otherwise. There were attempts made to contact him or his successors to aquire the formulas and methodology, but the trail faded out in a series of very frustrating dead ends. Quite perplexing!

I know every one here has their favorite smoke juice, but I'm telling you there has been nothing like this stuff since.

I would really appreciate it if some of the heritage members of the Forum would chime in if they recall this situation when LVS basically just stopped and the trail ran cold. I would really like to know the rest o the story....
