Natural mineral oil.
NADA
I use different scents in diff. engines and accessories (have to keep track of that). I've got coal fired, wood smoke, cinnamon, vanilla, hot chocolate, apple, cotton candy, cherry, barbecue. The only one I don't really like is the barbecue (in my smoking diner). But if I had to choose two favorites from that list.....the cotton candy is dead on and the cinnamon is a crowd pleaser.

MTH Christmas Scent and Mega Steam Eliminator
MTH has a sample pack, 3 each of 12 different scents in 50ml bottles, but the MSRP is $189. Ouch! Mega Steam has a holiday six pack, but I didn't look up the price. Check their website for more details.
The other thing is every one's sense of smell is different, what smells good to some can be foul smelling to others. I'm sure I'm the odd man out here, but I have at least 6-8 bottles of Mega Steam and the only one I can stand is the eliminator.
Eliminator and Nada
American Flyer!

American Flyer!
Is there an American Flyer scent now?
MTH Pipe smoke and Mega Steam Original Cedar.....
"What's the eliminator?"
Eliminator is a fluid Megasteam has come out with to clean out other scents from the smoke system. it has the added benefit of quieting down some noisy smoke fans.
ROOT BEER !!!!!
Well, I like many scents, but, for nostalgia, you can't beat Lionel Smoke Pellet for me.
forgot the smoke pellets as bob severin mentioned.i go thru 3 or 4 smoke pellets per session followed by what i already mentioned as my favorites.
terry.....
"I'll have to try eliminator kind. Does it really work well with the noisy smoke fan?"
Varying degrees of success. Takes several doses.
I'm fond of the fruit scents, but there is a conditional favorite -- Hot Chocolate when I am running my Polar Express.
Andy
I really like apple pie flavored smoke.
Coal fired steamer
Oil fired steamer
Diesel

Pretty sure that what is meant here is the original postwar Gilbert AF cedar scent. Anormal (the brand of fluid, Anormal) has a scented smoke fluid which is an olfactory dead ringer for the original. It is an aroma that brings out a nostalgic twinge in many.

My Mom and Dad used to take me to a neighborhood bar on West 105th street in Cleveland when I was very young, whipper-snapper young. On Friday nights, there was a fish fry. Now, I am not a smoker, but the memory of fried fish, cigarette smoke, and beer from Sinjur's Bar has always been a fond memory to me. Not currently a smoke scent that is offered, but, I'll bet there are others like this one that many of you remember from your childhood that bring out an old memory of your own, that would be a welcome smoke scent, at least once more in your life.
JT's Mega Steam NADA. It is not entirely without a smell - it does have a very faint odor of something having been burned, but not enough to disturb my wife's delicate, sensitive nose. It is a lifesaver.
JTs pumpkin pie, hot chocolate and vanilla.

Mine is pipe smoke and ciderpine scent.Because it reminds me of my granddaddy. On christmas morning I would get up to see what santa left for me.And would see my grand daddy seting in front of the fireplace smoking his pipe.Cider because we would go and cut down a cidertree for christmas. Those two secent would sometime blend together.I had some mth pipe scent smoke.Mth nailed that one smelled just like granddaddys pipe.May god rest his soul.
I tried several, but what I ended up sticking with in the shop when testing locos was JT Mega Steam Vanilla. It was the only one that didn't bother my eyes and/or nose in some way.
JT Megasteam Coal Fired Steamer and Christmas Pine are used most. Also have Lumber Mill (sawdust smell) and am considering some more wilderness scents.
I like the Coal Fired Steamer for the realism, Wife hates it, She likes the Christmas Pine tho.
JT Megasteam Grape for me and Vanilla for the wife.
Ben, working on an electrified rail line, I'd have thought your favorite scent would be Ozone.
I like the Smell of Coal from my steam engines. I don't have any diesals with smock.
Too bad I can't run my steam at Christmas unless I turn off the smock or I'd get a christmas sent. Sure would nice if I could make'm smell like my grandpa's pipe. Half & Half always filld the house when I was a kid.
We mainly use JT's Christmas Pine or Vanilla.
Marx, in the WICKED green bottle!
Flyer super Smoke but Nada is my real choice.
MegaSteam's.....
- Cotton Candy
- Maple Sugar
- Black Licorice
I rotate JT's Hot Chocolate and Popcorn.
Still run some Supersmoke Classic Cedar. It reminds me of my childhood, the wife says it just gives her a headache.
My favorite is smoke that smells like smoke. Spent two hours opening up and replacing the wick in a pre-owned S2 Alco that was contaminated with -- yuch -- vanilla smoke. And it STILL stinks!
I just browsed TJ's and boy what a list. I an going to have to order Grandpas pipe smock.
Or have to start smocking my pipe again. Sorry Doc's.....
Hot chocolate
Candy Cane
Cinnamon Roll
NADA

Try eliminator from megasteam. That's what it was made for.
JT's ....
Maple Sugar -- the steamer on the Christmas layout
Coffee -- in the diner (going to try Beer and Frying Bacon this fall)
Diesel Power -- on our layout
the PW 2046 stays old school
Grandpa's pipe
John
WP
Hot chocolate
Candy Cane
Cinnamon Roll
Does the hot chocolate really smell like hot chocolate? May grand daughter likes her some chocolate. LOL that's what she waits for on the polar express out of Owasso.
Grandpa's pipe
I remember moving to my grandpas house. There was this cloud of smock that seemed to linger for hours. Always half & half. Oh yah white owl cigars too.

Why thank you very much Forrest!
J.T.'s "Mega Steam" NADA!
The best scent is NO scent!
NADA
Is NADA absolutely scentless?
I did try it once and my olfactory senses detected that dreadful putrid "classic" smoke aroma. It turned my sinus inside out.
Perhaps it was just the residual smoke fluid burning itself out before the NADA smoke fluid could take over. I couldn't take it so OFF the smoke unit went.
If there truly is a scentless smoke fluid, I would be on it faster than Gunrunnerjohn on a faulty O Gauge circuit board!
No Nada is not totally scentless. It does have a hint of smell that can be detected.
I like seeing them smoke but even with Nada they get shut off after a short while.
JT's Mega-Steam "Diesel Power" in my diesels and "Hickory Wood" in my cabooses (cabeese).
To my sense of smell, the NADA has the LEAST odor of the few I have tried. Lionel's is far more tolerable than MTH's regular, which has always smelled like burning rubber to me! Go figure!
Obviously, there are many subjective variables with all of our senses!
DO THEY HAVE GUN SMOKE?
DO THEY HAVE GUN SMOKE?
That's funny... I smelt enough of that growing up in Motown, or is it Notown now!
I'm with BEN, BEER!!!! Which reminds me to make a B double E double R UN, BEERRUN!!!!!

Original A.C. Gilbert American Flyer smoke.
Smoke Pellets.
The ultimate smell on a layout: smoke units in cattle cars!
Cedar and Wood stove. I like my wood burners to smell like smoke.
I have some JT's Cedar Scent. Okay, it kinda' smells like cedar. I also have some JT's Coal-Fired scent. I can't really smell anything. I wonder if I got some no-scent that was mislabeled?
Does anybody make some Creosote-scent? Now, THAT I would pay good money for!
Cinnamon roll. Kids and adults like it. Makes them hungry..
My STD berk belts it out.
Mixed freight,
If you can't smell anything in the coal fired bottle, something is amiss. That stuff is NASTY!
Roger
Pipe smoke or coffee
I haven't used many different variations of the Smoke Fluid, what I typically use is the Mega-steam Diesel , Coal Fired, Cedar Wood, and Hot Chocolate, though the Hot Chocolate is only used in the Polar Express LionChief Train, though I don't get a lot of options to run a Christmas Train.
MTH smoke fluid always reminds me of York. I'm not sure what "flavor" it is but it always makes me think of York. I love the smell. After that it would be a cedar or christmas smell.
I prefer Mega Steam's big boy smoke fluid blend, but when that ran out I use coal fired steam.
The original American flyer scent.
Lovin’ the Mega-Steam lavender!
I prefer as little smell as possible, so I use unscented, any brand.
Having said that, the American Flyer-scented "Anormal1" is not bad...

My favorite was from a small manufacturer who unfortunately is long, long gone. I'm sure many of you will remember LVS (Lehigh Valley Steam). The small brown bottles with the eyedroppers containing Hickory or Smoky Fir or Cedar were the best ever. Some of the modern makers come close, but not quite. They always reminded me of the Fall train running season...

Anormal1 is the closest I have found. The early AF that came in the maroon gel caps smells more mellow than the later stuff. Maybe it just mellowed sitting in the loco.
The reproduction stuff smells like the later AF fluid.
Like some other folks, my tolerance for smoke is less than it used to be when I was younger.
I use "Gilbert Flyer" genuine Cedar Scented smoke fluid in my American Flyer locomtives. Its' the closest thing to what I remember as a kid.
I love the Flyer smoke but I'm a big fan of MTH Christmas scent. I like the coal and diesel but the Christmas reminds me of York!
My vote goes to the original American Flyer "cedar' scent.
I personally prefer Coal Oil or Valve oil.
I used to use the plain, regular, MTH Protosmoke. Then my local hobby shop ran out but had Protosmoke Christmas scent in stock. I liked it so I've been using it since. My wife seems to hate the smell less than the regular Protosmoke so that's a plus.
I like MTH Christmas scent, my favorite by far. I also like the scent of Mega-Steam Eliminator and use it occasionally.

John-
I remember LVS. I bought several bottles of their coal scent, because it reminded me of my first excursion back in the mid-80's behind NKP 765, from Orville, Ohio to Bellevue, Ohio. I have many bottles of coal scent from MTH, Megasteam, and maybe another random manufacturer or two. In my mind, while the others are close, none of them seem to remind me of that trip as much as the LVS- just seems to be a more intense smell. Maybe not the most healthy of the bunch, but in the immortal words of Redd Foxx- "You got to leave here with somethin".
I've searched for LVS smoke fluid many times and come up empty. I do have one full bottle and one partial bottle, but I have to pick my spots to use it, because my wife & step-daughter don't have my "taste" for some things, and this happens to be one of them.
Mike,
Thank you for remembering that. I have a bottle of Coal squirreled away as well and a bottle of Hickory. No Smokey Fir, which was my favorite scent.
Quite a few years ago on the Forum (pre-2005 or so) there was quite a discussion when the original owner of LVS stopped production, either through retirement or otherwise. There were attempts made to contact him or his successors to aquire the formulas and methodology, but the trail faded out in a series of very frustrating dead ends. Quite perplexing!
I know every one here has their favorite smoke juice, but I'm telling you there has been nothing like this stuff since.
I would really appreciate it if some of the heritage members of the Forum would chime in if they recall this situation when LVS basically just stopped and the trail ran cold. I would really like to know the rest o the story....

A normal1 is my favorite but I ordered two bottles recently and Mike (the owner) informed me he was done making it! What a bummer,I am trying some JT cedar but it just does not put out the same smell.
Any suggestions?

Paul,
Who sells "GILBERT FLYER" smoke fluid?
Gunny
woodstove
Gunny, try Challenger. That is what I am now using for the original Gilbert scent. You can get it from Goldinhands and some other online suppliers. I buy mine in the 8oz bottle because the newer fan driven smoke units go through smoke fluid so fast.
Christmas Pine, Coffee, Cider, diesel and Saw mill
Just received in pine, vanilla, and cinnamon. Getting ready for the holidays.
Mth pipe smoke is used here.
AMFLYER,
I tried the Challenger fluid and almost every brand out there, I have settled on Bart's Super smoke and Big Puff I alternate the fluids and am finally getting the old FLYER smell.
Thanks for your suggestion
Gunny
JT Mega Steam’s smoke pellet scent is my favorite so far. Their Pine scent is a close second. Anything pine scented reminds of Christmas.
Pumpkin Pie.......

Rancid fat and smelly feet (I model early 19th century passenger equipment. Then it was common to grease the passenger car axles with tallow fat and passengers would open the windows and let their bare feet hang outside during the summer) - needless to say mine is a scratch-mixed blend.
After trying several, not all, scents, I think I actually like the plain old Lionel scent, what ever that is. I can say I did like pine, but kind of got tired of that smell.
