I was working on my brother's layout that has one Z-4000 hooked up to two loops through a TIU using variable channels. Layout has been working fine for several months. Had a single engine on outer track (right handle of Z4000) and notice with engine in neutral that the current reading display was jumping around from 0.4 amps to 1.5, 3.6, 2.2, etc. The voltage was solid at 18V.  The left channel had no issue. We put a different engine on track with same result. Put in a spare Z4000 transformer and both channels perform correctly with all engines.

When we first noticed the amp display jumping around, the engine was running and performed normally.

So before I commit to having the transformer sent in for repair, are there other things recommended that I might try or is there likely an internal problem? I do notice that on the problem transformer both handles are much "looser" than the second transformer.

Appreciate any feedback or suggestions to further troubleshoot.

Nothing external that seemed loose. I'm reasonably proficient in electrical items; is it reasonable for me to open up the transformer to check for loose connections inside? Are there any instructions, pictures or video on taking apart?  Would like to be able to fix myself if a matter of a loose connection, maybe something like the TIU internal loose connections.
