Zinc Pest on new Lionel castings

My sons Bethlehem Steel 060 dockside switcher suffered the dreaded pest. The rear diecast coupler disentegrated in his hands. This engine is only 3 years old. Is this common in the new stuff as well? Are they recycling the material too much and is the boiler castings in trouble as well ? Has anyone had any trouble with this as well.

Both MTH & Lionel have problems with zinc pest, although the problem is very limited, and likely with a very short run of castings (I have seen a FEW problems with trucks, couplers, smoke units). I would contact them with photos of the problem and see if they will replace the coupler, otherwise the part should be relatively inexpensive.

I did not think of sending pics of the ruined coupler. Our local hobby shop shaid that they have changed out several of them so far. I was going to get one from them but the tech man was not working yesterday. I will see what I can come up with.
