0-8-0 Legacy Engine Error?

A battery should solve your chuff loss. Mine crawling through some turnouts will occasionally lose it's sound. The battery should keep the Railsounds powered up till the rollers or wheels make good contact again.

One thing I do with smaller locomotives is to parallel the tender rollers with the locomotive rollers with a small tether wire.  This eliminates the issue of sound dropouts without using a battery.  After seeing several batteries that have leaked all over inside the tender, I don't routinely use a battery for TMCC/Legacy.  I put a PTC in series with the tether to protect the wiring in case of a derailment that shorts the rollers of one unit to the outside rail.

Thanks guys.  I'll be calling Lionel again today to check what else I can do about the lost crew talk.  During her test run, she also lost a screw on a side rod.  I found it when I was cleaning the track.  I am becoming moderately irritated with QC.  

You do know about the two volume controls, right?

If you hit ALT1 and then volume up, and repeat this sequence a few times, maybe the crew talk will come back.

Another thing to try is to do the reset from the User's Manual.

Uh, noooooo.  I didn't know about the two of them.  I have the tender set to max, and have just been using the volume keys on the 990.  I'll try that tonight.  Thanks John!

John, did you mean AUX1?  I'm not aware of an ALT1 on the 990...

Alt-1, aux-1, what's the difference.

Obviously, I did mean AUX-1.

What I posted was a Legacy 0-8-0 manual page, but I didn't know your specific locomotive number.  I suspect it's right, but you can check your manual and see what they say the reset procedure is.

It's all good John... just wanted to make sure.  These old eyes have overlooked such things before!

Here's what I tried while frantically cleaning the house for incoming guests...

I went to the Lionel online videos and reprogrammed the engine and still NADA.  Played around with the AUX1 and volume.  NADA.

Other crew talk still works fine, just no tower commands for speed changes.  

John, this is the Legacy PM 1300 6-11251.  It's not a TMCC engine... so do I still try that procedure you outlined above?

Thanks John.  I will do it and report back.  And next, you can help me figure out how to do a lashup...  I'll have to install my pilot bearing on my new PM1225 first though.  I read the manual on it, but am not sure I understand.  My old PM1225 is still operational though...  

John, I tried the procedure you outlined above.  Still no speed crew talk.  Also, there was no way to get to "1" after I hit Aux 1.  ??  It showed me the std AUX1 keys...

You just hit the key that corresponds to 1, it knows.

Gentlemen, thanks for the assist!  I tried both suggestions.  Operation remains the same.  I hear the radio crackle beginning and end, but no tower commands or engineer reports for speed changes.  Maybe my chip is defective?

That's a very odd scenario, I think it's time to discuss this with Lionel and see what they say.  Maybe Rudy will chime in here and have some suggestions.

On my Vision Line Genset switcher, the manual states that there is no speed step crew talk because it's a switcher. Mine does the same thing you describe. Check your manual for this.

Never thought of that Jim, checked the manual for my Genset and sure enough!

There is no mention of this in my manual, but on page 10 (speed bar operation), it states that crew talk sounds when holding down the speed icon (item 19).  Yes, I know this is a switcher, but if this feature is unavailable, then why would the radio static "key" at the beginning and end of the missing sequence?

Sorry I am late to this party--Marty sent me a pointer. You guys have correctly identified what's going on. Because the switchers run a slower speeds, Legacy Switchers have always omitted speed-preset dialog. I left the static burst intact so as to provide some feedback to the operator that indeed, the button press was received. Otherwise, this could masquerade as a CAB2 problem.

Rudy- thank you very much for responding.  This is my first switcher (but not my last!  LOL), and I expected it to act like my other Legacy engines.  I'm glad that it is operating as you designed it.  

Now, if I could just edit the sound file... I'd love to have Rich boss it around from the tower.
