Spence,

You do not want to go through the claim proces. They have a third party company. The first thing they do is reject you so you have to file an appeal. They accepted the appeal but now I have to fill out more paperwork to try to get them to pay the claim. It will probably take a couple of months. In the meantime, I have a customer that does not have his building and I cannot go ahead and build another one until I settle this.

I had one bad experience with damage to a train item I bought from an ebay seller using Paypal.  It was so long ago I don't recall what the item was but a couple of important points to remember.

First, it is the seller/shipper who is the insured party; not the buyer.

Second, because the damaged item is in the hands of the buyer, the seller will need the buyer's cooperation to file and support the claim the seller will file.  Buyers receiving a damaged item will be motivated to do so.

Third, take plenty of photographs of the damaged box as well as the item and save the box and packing materials.  If the claim is for more than a nominal amount, the shipper will likely want to pick-up the item, box, packing material, and anything the buyer has relevant to the shipment.

Fourth, the shipper or its insurance adjuster will want to determine the fair market value of the loss.

The claim procedure, and information required, can be reviewed on the shipper's claim procedure on their website.

Regarding my one bad experience, the seller was reluctant to refund my money until his claim was resolved.  Because I used Paypal, I received a refund before the seller's claim was paid.  The most significant item in Paypal's refund procedure was whether I had returned the damaged item to the seller.  In my case, since the shipper required the item, packaging, etc., Paypal only required that I supply proof that I had returned the item to the shipper; I did so; and, I got my money back.

That experience is a big reason why I strongly prefer to buy using Paypal.

I've been very lucky with UPS. We've had the same guy for a couple years now. In the summer months with the doors and windows open he toots his horn as he pulls up. If my garage door is open(it's an attached garage)he puts the packages in the garage on my work bench or next to the door going into the house. If the garage door is closed , and in the winter months, he puts the packages on the front porch in the corner where they are hard to see from the street and rings the doorbell.

I only had one issue with UPS and that was when the JLC scale gg1's were delivered. I got it on time but the pkg was crushed to the point you ould not determine what it was.  It looked like a vehicle ran over the box. It was flat as a pancake.

It should have never been delivered according to the UPS rep. The dealer did refund my purchase and then i guess was refunded by UPS.

AMAZING THAT THEY WOULD EVEN TRY TO DELIVER SOMETHING THAT DAMAGE. .
