I have changed one of the traction's tires 3 times and it stays on for a while and then comes off and stick straight out the side near the bolt, i have tried many different tries what is the secret to making the new tire stay on,should it be glued on or what, i have never had this problem with other steam engines?

Singed confused!

Never put a tire that fell off back on a wheel.  It will come off again.  No glue or Bullfrog crap.  Always replace a tire with a new tire.  The big thing on installing a tire is to roll it onto the wheel.  Never stretch a tire over the wheel.  Unlike a rubber band, a traction tire will not return to the shape it started out as.  Here is some information on MTH tires.  It is a smart move to use these MTH tires on Lionel as they are a step above the Lionel tires.  This chart will be helpful.  Look at DE-0000018.  That tire fits just about every diesel made.  That is the tire you want to use on your Lionel diesels.

Alan,

It's best to follow the advise given by Marty and George(GGG).

I'd like to add this one little tid-bit that I've learned over time. Make sure everything is clean BEFORE you even touch your new tires. THIS INCLUDES YOUR HANDS. WASH WITH HOT SOAPY WATER. Any oils off the engine parts can attack the soft materials in the tires. This will cause them to rapidly degrade in as little as an hour. Give it a try, you'll be amazed.

Pappy and GGG made a good point.  A traction tire put on a clean wheel will go the distance.  I do that automatically.   I see PS-1 engines with original good tires.  Remember, if a tire came off, throw it away.  Roll the tire over the wheel and do not stretch it, no glue (big no-no), no bullfrog crap, do not remove all tires, and use the right tire for the job.  Tires are cheap.  I have about 50 Lionel diesels and every one gets MTH tires.  I saw a broken tire  next to my track last week and hit the panic button.  I had to review everything I ran.  It was nothing I fixed for Charlie as checking tires is on my check list before an engine goes back in the box.  It turned out to be a friend's engine who I let him use my layout to run a used engine he purchased.

Thanks Marty for a lot of great advice, i remember it and have also printed out the chart of tires you send me.Sincerely Thanks to  Marty and all with there great suggestions. i noticed i had trouble getting the tires to go  flush even with the cut in the steel wheel, the tire kept coming back up a little , i wonder maybe it is a bad wheel driver might need to be replaced!

any thoughts

Alan

Marty or anyone else that could do this, it might help if someone could video the process of roll versus stretch of the replacement tire installation. I picture or in this case a video would really provide everyone a resource that can be used from now until we go to MagLev Trains!

Bullfrog crap? You, of course, are entitled to your opinion.  I've used it on two large O-gauge steamers, BB and Challenger and a Pacific and have had no problems with it. It works as advertised.  Have you ever used the product?  Same rules apply as the rubber tires, wheel rims must be clean and free of oil/grease/ etc. BTW, I have no vested interest in this product. I was reluctant to try it. Put it on a BB, that worked so tried it on some other engines.

Steve, I am very familiar with the product.  I am sick and tired of people bringing me diesels with the gears loaded with it.  It is a problem for repair guys.  How long ago did you put it on your wheels?  You listed three engines.  What engines did you put the product on?

Steve, I run a large layout with a few locomotives.  When a job (tire replace) needs to be done, I only want to do it one time.  A tire properly installed on a clean wheel will keep on running.

BTW, my opinion is based on working on many hundreds of locomotives each year.  Unfortunately I see several that the BF crap has been used on.  My opinion is based on facts and circumstances that involve more than a few locomotives.

Everyone is entitled to do what they want when working on trains.  I have an extremely high standard on proper repair and operation and use what is going to do the job the best.

Thanks again Marty i like the screw driver idea with the engine upside down running and guiding the tire on, i never realized what you had said about over stretching the tire and it not shrinking back in place ! EXCELLENT INFORMATION!I will remember your help and guidance in  this matter.!

Thanks again

Alan

p.s i wanted to meet you when i came to york but did not see you! i was there on Friday!hope to meet you sometime!

I did get to meet Mike Wolf and complemented him on the quality of MTH engine, better then Lionel, he said Thanks and smiled!

Alan

Ok MARTY , i know  your a great person and I'm "Glad to have met you I'm like you i like to help people on the forum if i can!Would like to meet you someday for SURE>

Thanks for all your help.

I really enjoy workoing on any kind of electronics, i enjoy the challenge and making something thatr does not work or is intermittent which is a REAL CHALLANGE! i think you'll agree!

I found a real nice set of Union pacific mint passenger cars at York for my Big Boy to pull, complete set with ALL the cars and extra cars that were suppose to go together, and the owner never has taken them out of the box!

Glad to know you, your friend always!

Alan

P.S. and yes i have heard mike wolf is not the easiest person to work for or buy trains from, have heard this from many people.

Thanks Alan Mancus

Alan, thank you very much.  I was joking earlier as I have been friends with Mike for 35 years outside the hobby.  Mike is business all the way when he is working or he would not be where he is today.  Outside trains, he is a great guy, although he does not like my Patriots.

Gentlemen,

Train Country is Steelers Country, Don Shula had the rules of NFL Football changed to

keep the Steelers from winning many more Super Bowls, Mike Wolf is a great guy, however he has his problems when he comes to the Pittsburgh, Pa area.  Dolphin fans are taboo here in Steeler Train Country.  We even have our own Steelers Super Bowl Train, 6 Super Bowl Box Cars on that train now, and many Steelers speciality cars also.  Dolphins might have a Super Bowl Engine, if they are lucky.

Steelers Country is Train Country.

PCRR/Dave
