I picked up a couple of these from Ebay to power the yard lights that I converted to high output LEDs. These AC/DC converters have a max output of 3 amps so they will handle the yard lights.
My question is: Can you tell by looking at them, which is input and which is output?? The only markings on either side is a - and +.

If the pair of terminals on the left of your photo connect to the bridge rectifier (the black thing next to the terminals), then that is the AC input. The DC output has the + and - identifiers.
Usually the sellers will have a "data" sheet on the listing. I have found it good to copy/print that so I will have it when the thing comes after several weeks.
The data sheet on these didn't say or show which was in or out. I should have known from the + and - markings as Dale said that is the output. The input for AC doesn't have a + or -.
I have a couple of those pretty similar to yours, mine have a knob instead of the adjustment pot. The output is on the right, between the adjustment pot and the coil as Dale M. describes above.
Take the 3A rating with a grain of salt. None of these modules get anywhere close to the advertised ratings without getting pretty hot. The switchers are better than the linear models, but I'd plan on no more than about half that output current.
John, have you ever tried the AM radio test to see if the switcher is radiating RF? Seems like that might be a potential problem, and we know from the TMCC switcher for the sound card power supply that this can interfere with proper operation. I doubt that the switcher board is FCC certified.

I have not tested those, I have used a couple, and so far they have not been an issue.
