Sounds to me like you are blaming the engines when the actual problem may be with the track or with one or more of the switches. How do the three engines perform on areas of the layout where they just traverse one switch? What size are the switches? How are the switches configured on the layout (left switch and right switch, two left (or right) switches, etc.)?
