Picture of what you did? Drawing? It's more guess work without seeing what you did. All you should do is replace the diode (the disc only, not the resistance wire)

Backwards it should ring a bell on modern units, post war wont care and should whistle faced either way.

I tried to get to Olsen's Trains but couldn't. This one is from another thread
