Unless you are 7 feet tall with a 5 foot "wingspan," you will never reach the back track across from your transformers when a derailment occurs. (Notice, I didn't say "if.") Most people recommend a maximum reach of 2.5 to 3 feet unless you plan to walk or crawl on your layout.
