Late afternoon light + B&W = winner!

Outstanding photography and modeling Lee.

Thanks much, gents! As I was converting the third shot (of the front of the store, again showed below), I noticed that one of the sitting figures looks like he's shielding his eyes from the sun:

It's really hard to see here, but I took photos of signs for products that were sold in that area in that timeframe, and printed them in card or paper and put them on the exterior walls on this store. It's the research and application of detail that I really enjoy.

it's all about the details!

It is, indeed. I've made no secret of the fact I'm not one of these, "build a layout, step back and look at it, then immediately break out the saw to start over" types. I've enjoyed many building aspects of the hobby, but I didn't really enjoy my layout all that much until it at least looked like something other than track nailed down to plywood.

I'm enjoying it a lot now that I am going over areas of the layout, wondering how I can improve the realism, then trying my best effort at doing exactly that. Tyler Whitcomb, an amazing N scale modeler in Tacoma, said it best when I showed him photos of my layout when I ran across him at the Monroe WA show. He looked and said, "So, you're at the super-detail phase, huh?" The man has built a few layouts so he knew the progression, I guess. But he called it exactly.

This is the part I'm enjoying now.

Lee, that loco in the sunrise picture rivals Erik's photos for realism between the modelling and the lighting.

Thank you very much, I'm very flattered with any comparison's to Erik's amazing photo work (though I'm nowhere in his class). I just lucked up on that, as what is essentially a staging area with scenery on the layout straddles the one window in the room. Sometimes I can play with the lighting if the sun is in the right spot and I open the blinds.

This afternoon, I got an odd feeling that i was about to see something cool out on the mainline, so I grabbed my camera and went to the nearest spot to catch the action. I can't say why, i just had a feeling and I'd been wrong before.

Anyway, less than 10 minutes goes by and the Coast Starlight heads north, with a private car on the back end!

Then, in less than half an hour, I see two running meets within sight of where I was!

Not bad for less than an hour, huh?

P51 - WOW!!  A private car on the tail of an Amtrak train!  Talk about a vanishing vista.  Lucky you!

Patrick, I'm glad you enjoyed my silly posts during today's Yankee game. I was a little concerned that I, once again, went way over the top on this Forum.

It was a lot of fun for me to watch my favorite team win yet another game (I think they have now won 14 out of 15 taking turns being the hero in each victory) and simultaneously posting on this Forum.  My favorite was the last one with Frank Sinatra (he loved Lionel trains as much as we do and he sure would have loved being a member of this Forum) singing The Theme Song New York, New York.

Randy's gorgeous Pennsy Steamer and coal drag inspired me to make a video of my favorite Pennsy Steamer and coal drag:

MTH Railking K4 hauling 9 postwar coal dump cars and Pennsy postwar caboose.

When pulling that many postwar operating cars thru O31 curves and 022 switches, you want to be sure the wheels are well oiled.

Here is a video of my Pennsy coal drag on the other end of my layout:

I love the look of the Pennsy coal drag because it reminds me of something from my childhood. I had a lovely aunt Ruth, whose husband was very successful. She gave me many Lionel trains and accessories as birthday and Christmas gifts throughout my childhood. She was a beautiful woman who was the spitting image of Donna Reed. Anyway, she and her husband lived on a 5 acre estate in Pennington, NJ with a sprawling split level home, and they were members of the Hopewell Country Club, not far from their home in NJ.  I would spend 2 or 3 weeks of my summer vacations with my aunt and uncle, when we often went swimming at the Hopewell Country Club. The Pennsylvania Railroad tracks went right by the pool area at that country club, where we would see Pennsy coal drags the seemed to go on forever! I was always astonished at how long those coal trains were.

The coal drags I saw there were pulled by powerful diesel engines, and maybe GG1s (though I'm not sure about that), but not steam engines. The Pennsy locomotives I saw were very powerful and made the ground shake.

I think memories like mine above add a lot to the charm of model railroading.

Oh boy, what are the chances, that two out of three are standing at my station platform right now and the third has been spotted around town as well. Good thing I have E00EA359-9FB2-4B23-8759-C50BCF9BE02Dadded to my police force!

Nice station!

Here are my newest babies, they are Atlas O Master Series EMD Demonstrator F-2/F-3 Powered A (291A), Powered B (291B1) and a Non-Powered Dummy B (291B2). After doing a bit of searching I found that these F3's were sold to TP&W and I was able to find pictures of the A Unit that was renumbered to 100A. The B Unit was also sold to them but later converted to an A Unit with the designation of F3Am. I love finding these old pictures!!

Johan, the scenery around Poorvoo is breathtaking. More photos of the scenery to go with the layout pictures please!

Don did the end of the line for that "F" unit make to the islands?

Joe: That takes probably some weeks. I just came home some foot operation and can't walk or drive a car 6-8 weeks what is a really boring. Before that i can post only some older pics.

If some of mine friends has time help me i can go some easy place where i can take max 50 steps and take pics.

Someone explain this one.  Were these in use frequently?

Probably to get them through the tunnels and snow sheds if they were not driving a cab forward loco.

Well, there are no snowsheds or cab-forwards on the Southern Ry (it's not an SP photo.)

Correct however, it is so the crew can breath through the many tunnels on the Southern's Rat Hole Division.  The air supply is tapped off the main reservoir.

Patrick, your personal record has been awarded ten merits for your high people and vehicles to trains ratio and for moving your people and vehicles frequently to keep the scenes changing.  (And for having more fun than anyone else with your little people and vehicles.)

Thanks so very much Tom.   I get a kick out of moving things around on the layout.  I like to keep scenes fresh .... just like real life .... all things change ... the only permanence is impermanence.  I do have one heck of a lot of fun too.
