Hello!!! It is the local MTH Genius again here.

I got lucky enough to Buy a Used Remote from a member of the New Jersey Hi-Railers, and the remote is set to Version 6.1,while the TIU,which I also bought from the Hi-railers, I am using for the first time, so I am unsure of the Software on it.

I keep getting the "Out of RF RANGE" message on the Remote.

It will not add engine.

When I do a read, it says 1 TIU found,no active DCS engines.

Is this the reason?,because the TIU is a different version than the remote???

I tried my 2nd TIU I bought from Marty Fitz awhile back, and it is Version 5.0,no luck on that one either.

If I do a reset remote, will this snyc it up to the TIU,or do I have to go online and update the TIU to the latest version to match the remote????Or what about reset TIU?? I need to learn how to do these updates myself sooner or later!!!!!

I finally do have a Windows computer to do them on,what do I need now as far as cables and everything to be able to upgrade my stuff on my own???

I told you guys I wanna learn about these engines, and I am starting at the beginning again. I sold almost everything I had last spring ,vowing NOT to get into O gauge trains anymore. But my life is not complete with out them,so here I am back at trying to get started up again.

Any advice greatly appreciated as always.-Kenny B

You can find out what version of the software is with.... Menu/System/ Tiu set up/ Tiu version....

It's best to have the same version software in remote/ tiu... However  I think you probably should be able to add a engine with different versions providing they're not really old  such as 2.1  3.1 etc  I would think version 5 would work with version 6. I'm just guessing.

.... Menu/System/ Tiu set up/ Tiu version.... Any luck?

Upgrading is very easy.  Don't be scared off.  You need a short stereo cable with 1/8" stereo jacks on each end, to connect two terminals on the TIU, and a USB to serial adapter cable to connect a computer that lacks a serial port to the TIU.

They should be all the same version, to work properly; no telling what results you'll get otherwise.  FYI, I have TIUs and remotes dating from original issue, and they all work fine with 6.1.

If you bought something from Marty Fitz, you bought from a top-drawer guy.  If you have a problem, call him.  I bet first thing he'll say is to have all units at 6.1, which is the latest.

You might also reset the remote to clean out all the data from the former owner's old layout

Hello,I did find the Version on the one I got from the Hi-Railers.It is Version 4.3  .

The other Version I got from Marty Fitz is 5.0

I remembered to enable the DCS in DCS setup, but am still getting the infamous "NO ENGINEon TRACK MESSAGE". Looks like it is time for me to upgrade these TIU's or something.

If I reset the remote, that won't screwup the version it's on,or will it?

Ok    we know the remote and tiu are communicating with each other. That's good. What we don't know is....  how good is the dcs signal on each tiu channel. The only way to find out is with a small test track hooked up to fixed 1 for starters  and try and to  add a engine. If successful   you can try a track signal test..

When you first apply power to fixed 1 with engine on test track  does the engine remain dark & silent? or does it start up ? (it should remain dark & silent.)

You really should follows RJR advice and upgrade the tiu software.

While I've never tested this, my advise would be to get everything to the same software version.  MTH's recommendation is everything is at the same level.  Typically software is OK within minor versions (ie 6.0 and 6.1) but going between 4.3 and 6.1 is 2 major releases of the software.  Barry is the only person on this list I would lean on for clarity but for troubleshooting sake, I would get everything at the same REV just to eliminate that as a potential issue.

The only comments that I'll make are the following.

The first is that I consider it to be a waste of time to attempt to troubleshoot any DCS issue unless the remote and TIU are using the same version of DCS software. There's no way of knowing what may be any incompatibilities between different versions of the DCS software.

The second is that since each release of DCS typically corrects one or more defect in the software, sometimes without advertising the fact, it can be equally wasteful to troubleshoot issues if the latest release of DCS isn't installed in both the remote and the TIU. The issue at large many be due to a bug that has been corrected in a later DCS release.

Yep.BARRY FIRST THINGS FIRST.It was just Sunday, and I wanted to run some trains!!!!!

SOS!!! SOS!!!!

BTW,WHO do I contact at OGAUGERR to get back my DCS companion digital book??? I know I bought it through the forum, and when my MAC book took a crap, there went my DCS companion. Life with out it ,is just too puzzling, then you have to run posts on the forum all the time when something goes wrong.

Can you direct me to THE MAN at Ogaugerr who would be able to know I purchased it?,and do they have the ablity to send me another one still??? I purchased it with a bank debit card I no longer have, because I went to CHASE Bank.

If it comes down to it,I guess I will just have to ante up and get another digital copy.(I knew I shoulda bought the hardcover book also!!!)

SOS!!!!

Want to run or start up a engine ...   reset  the remote  . sounds to me like the engine may already be installed  and if it has a weak battery the ID may have reverted back to something else. Menu/System/  remote set up/ reset remote.

.  Now hook up the tiu Marty sent you and a small test track using fixed 1.... using the remote   Add an MTH engine with Menu/ System/ engine set up/ add engine/ add MTH engine.   It should add.
