Hi

I was hoping someone could give me some info or pointers for floquil drying time on a plastic structure, brushed on. I used antique white on trim, and it seems very slow to dry. I wait a day or two, and when I go to apply a second coat, it just pulls up or streaks the first coat. Am I just not waiting long enough?

Thanks for any advice

It is oil based floquil right out of the jar. It does seem a bit thinner than some of the other colors I have used. I thought i may have not stirred well but i double checked and it seemed consistent throughout. It is being placed on an ihc kit, and yes, over very smooth plastic. Seems worse on the flatter smother surfaces. I tried another color on top and it also seemed to reactivate the first coat

Did you use primer? That can help, but it may be too late to go back on this project.

If it's not too much work, you might consider using some solvent to remove as much of the failed coat as possible. Test the solvent on an area that won't be seen to make sure it doesn't damage the plastic. Then try the primer.

One more tip: instead of stirring your paint, get some BB's, put 3 in the jar, and shake very well.

Gents,

I'm almost 100% sure that most of the time when dealing with plastic kits you need (it is recommended) to wash the pieces w/ soap and water prior to paint application due to the mold release agents used in the casting/forming process. That might be creating a bond breaker between the plastic and the paint...just food for thought.

Just an update. I applied second coat today after 4 days drying time. I used a soft brush with a light touch. Seemed to work much better and did not reactivate first coat. I think leaving the parts in my garage out of the ac may have helped, or maybe it was the 4 days. Next time I will first wash the parts with soap and water and see if that helps. It was def worse over the smoother surfaces, but again, this time success Thanks again.
