Howdy all!

I have been an avid follower/stalker of the OGR forum for many years but I finally decided to take the plunge and create an online account.  Apologies in advance if I posted this into the wrong section.

A little bit about me:

Trains are my main hobby but I also like to read, play/listen to Jazz, and cook. I run mainly 3-rail O gauge but I also dabble in N and G. I have been a member of the LCCA for many years and I also am with a local Garden Railroad Club.

What started as a modest loop of track when I was a young lad is now a decent sized L-shaped O Gauge layout (see attached phots). The layout tries to be somewhat realistic but I also wanted to capture the magic of Christmas. It's freelanced and is centered around the Northeast of the US during the winter time. There is a main loop of track with two large sidings and a small yard which services several industries. There is also have a Bump-n-Go trolley line that allows commuters to get to work in my developing industrial park. Some might recognize the layout from my other social media account (Instagram: oscale_trains_lover_ )

I am looking forward to learning and making new friends. Hope you all stay safe and healthy!

Your photo that included the lighted Country Church building with "stained glass" windows nudged my mind toward finishing a temporarily postponed project on my home layout; i.e., cutting and installing acetate "stained glass" panels for the now-plain windows of my MTH Country Church. I'm toying with the idea of placing a mini-CD player inside the church; with the touch of a remote button it would play recorded pipe organ music of popular hymns -- "Rock of Ages," "A Mighty Fortress," and so on.

Your post to this forum will have ripple effects -- all to the good!

All,

Thank you for the very warm welcome! I hope to get some more photos and videos up soon.

Bob,

Thank you! This remote learning is interesting to say the least. My lecture classes are very easy to make the switch to online learning. My laboratory sessions? Not so much...  But the show must go on!

Mike,

Great minds think alike! I actually have a lot planned for that MTH church. Stained glass windows, fully detailed interior, and a sound system to boot! I do not know if you have heard of the EZ Sound Box/EZ Sound Modules, but they are a recordable devices with playback features. I ordered a few and will let you know how they work when they come in (delivery is expected April 22ish). I plan on using them around the layout as fun/easy interactions with guests. I plan to have visitors hear everything from my church to Gerry Anderson's UFO flying saucer sounds (I may have some extraterrestrials on the layout ).

Adriatic,

I'm more than happy to help anyone with any possible electrical issues, but you don't want me posting vignettes all day long. I think everyone would be bored stiff!

I lurked for a few years too. So did many others.

I wanted to confirm things I thought I knew from childhood mostly, tweaking smoke output too (GRJ, DaleH, DaleM threads) and maybe contribute too as thanks for what I had learned or recalled while lurking. (great gramps and gramps collected big and ran big since prewar; I just liked playing with mine electronics was work for me too, so I'm post war lazy with tech when I can be )

Adriatic,

That sounds exactly like what I plan on doing.

Greg, Dale & Mitch,

Thank you for the welcome and comments on the layout!

Dave,

Some hot cocoa should warm you up! Haha

All,

I have attached a video of some action on the layout. My Premier K4 leads some K-line cars around the layout. I am uploading this directly from my cell phone so let’s hope I did this correctly haha.

Bryce,

Welcome. Before I joined here in 2000, I was interested in trains and my young boys were too. However, none of my friends or wife cared at all about trains. This forum plugged my into a group of people that were as fired up as me. I made friends. I joined TCA and have attended the York meet twice a year since, started my own local group of guys with layouts we host each other monthly, and joined two modular clubs. None of that would have happened without this forum.

Look forward to talking with you more.

What part of the country are you in?

Craig,

That is awesome! Hopefully I can also create a local group after the social distancing/quarantine is over. I am from northern NJ.

Firewood,

Actually no it is not! This catenary is a product from "The Train Station" in Mountain Lakes, NJ. They have double track and single track systems. I personally prefer the look of it over MTH version.

John & Chris,

Thank you for the welcomes!

Bryce,

Good luck with the remote learning.  I was informed yesterday that the summer semester will also be delivered remotely.  You're right, lecture is do-able; labs not so much.  Out class 10,000 clean room is locked and even if we do get access all of our gloves and masks have been donated to local hospitals.

Lou,

My school's engineering department has the professors either doing one of two things:

- They record themselves doing the lab and we use their data

- The students will do everything via simulation software

It is not ideal, but we can still learn information and generate reports.

Bryce

Our program is work based learning.  The degrees are in MEMS (micro electro mechanical systems).  The labs are all hands on (e.g. how to thread a gold wire bonder or soldering 0402 components under a microscope).

Anyway, know that there are a number of engineers and educators here on the forum, including those who have small manufacturing businesses that supply us with needed components.  As a potential EE you should be following a fellow known as GUNRUNNERJOHN.  And there are manufacturers like Scott Mann from Sunset Third Rail and Steve Horvath from Atlas.

The resources here are vast.

Welcome from a fellow O scaler, EE, and SUNY grad (Maritime College, class of 1992).

Love the CNJ water tower, and the bridge.

Looks like a New York Central motif?

As you progress through your EE training, you'll find that there are plenty of neat tricks you can use on the layout.

Do you have plans for a working signal system? That would be a great place to "study" LED's, rectifiers, and transistor logic.

Welcome, Bryce.

I've been on the forum since its earliest days (we used to be assigned member numbers when it was a small group, and I'm member no. 76). Since all I've got is a 4x8 board, I don't post much but I lurk as often as I can and I've learned a lot from this varied and talented group of train folks here. Any question you ask will probably get answered here.

BTW, we share SUNY connections. My daughter got her undergrad degree from Oneonta, my wife and I graduated from Buffalo State, and I got my first master's at Stony Brook. The state schools are still an amazing bargain in higher education in New York.

Be well and stay safe in these trying times.

Chris

Mark, Chris S , gg1man, Joe,

Thank you!

Lou,

Sounds like a fun lab! I will certainly follow them as I plan to learn as much as I can!

Craig,

Sounds like a great idea! I've never been to York so that would be a fun experience.

Trainman2,

Thank you! I am a huge fan on the NYCRR and all her subsidiaries. I only have a handful of engines that are not related to the NYCRR. I have had a plan for a signal system since last summer but there has been no time between school and work. As you know, NJ is under quarantine/curfew due to COVID so I am back home.  Now I might have time to finally have time to do this as well as ~12 projects that are on the backburner.

Chris,

Thank you for the warm welcome. I would love to see your layout! Every time I see a new layout, I get inspiration. Even though I am from NJ, I believe that SUNY schools are top notch for education, cost, and ROI. Hope you and your family stay safe and healthy.

Bryce, same to you, we are all safe in Las Vegas.  Here is my outdoor layout, older video, outer loop now complete.  My indoor layout is still under construction (you never really finish a layout).  Hopefully video copies into the post.
